Q: icloud backup - Cannot Turn On - iPhone 7 iOS 10.0.1

Got my phone yesterday.  Did a OTA restore of my backup from yesterday.   Phone working fine with one exception.  My iClound "BACKUP" option inside settings I can't turn it on.

I have done all the normal steps, hard reset, reset network settings.  I have tons of space on iCloud for a back up, so no storage issues, etc.

It may be related to this (which I can't find an answer).. every once in a while now, I get ..

Sign in to iTunes store

Enter the password for your Apple ID _______ at gmail.com

&

Enter password for your Apple Device ___________ at gmail.com

This email is my regular email.. not my Apple ID which is _________ at me.com or ______ at icloud.com

Years ago before me.com / icloud.com iTunes used your own email... so maybe this is preventing me from getting iCloud to back up.

What is worse, is the pop ups to keep logging into this old account is driving me nuts.  Been on the phone with Apple and 1st level support can't figure anything out.

Anyone here have any ideas?

Happy to delete old backup / do a new backup.. I just need an answer.

    Greetings cls241,

Welcome and thanks for bringing your question about logging into iCloud on your new iPhone 7 - congrats on getting thew new iPhone!  I know I like the security of knowing I have everything backed up not just to iTunes but also to iCloud and to be able to use all that iCloud offers, so it's my pleasure to help you sort this out.

When you go to the Apple ID site, do you use an @me or @icloud address to sign in?  When you purchase apps, does an @me or @icloud account pop up for you to sign into?  Apple IDs that were created using @Mac, @me, or @icloud will always use that as the main sign in account and cannot be changed to a third party email provider's email account.  You can add additional email accounts (including third party like @gmail or @yahoo) but the official Apple ID will always be @Mac, @me, or @icloud.

It's possible you have multiple Apple IDs going on here which can definitely complicate things.  Try signing into the Apple ID site under the @gmail you mentioned and see if it's got any connection to the account you use for purchasing.  To simplify what you can do is use your @me account also as your iCloud account.  Look over the following link and scroll down to the Use different Apple IDs for iCloud and iTunes section for Apple's recommendation for this scenario: Sign in with your Apple ID on a new device - Apple Support

    Best wishes,

It's now escalated to 3rd level support at Apple. Years ago before .me and .icloud one used their own email for an iTunes account. That @gmail.com account is still attached to at least 1-app that was included in the backup.  After 8-years of apps, I can't tell which one, nor can 3rd level.

It's being sent to another department at Apple to find anything related to that old @gmail.com account and delete it from my history and from my app purchases.

However that renders my backups useless and I had to delete them all and set up my phone as new.  It's a hassle, but I don't have a choice.  Now my issue is my iPhone won't sync.   It syncs some stuff, but if I try to sync my music (let's say 200 songs) it will say it's done.. in 3-4 seconds and I will see two songs that can be played on my device, but 198 are there listed, but grayed out.   Tried a dozen fixes, nothing works.  Same with photos.  It will sync about 30 photos and then lock up iTunes. Tried on two separate computers, with the newest version of iTunes.

So my phone is a phone.. with apps.  No music, no photos.. except ones I now take.  Oh well..  I am not sure this brand new iPhone 7 will ever work right.
