Q: how do i tell which ram slot has ram in it on my imac G4

ok so i have an imac G4 1Ghz version and i dont have any tools to open it up to see what ram slots are empty for a ram upgrade how can i tell which ram slot is free with out having to open the mac

15" w/USB 2.0 - 1 - PC-2700 200-pin SO-DIMM (user accessible)

17" Flat Panel - 1 - PC-2100 200-pin SO-DIMM (user accessible)

 

If these are not what you have, then you need to provide a more specific description or identification. You might look for the model identification: To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

    There is one user accessible memory slot. You can install a maximum of 2GBs. The factory memory is pre-installed.

    so if i understand you correctly the sodim slot should be empty any idea what kind of memory i need ie how many pins what speed

    OK. Good sources for memory are OWC, DataMem, or Crucial.

     

    Now, my recall isn't as good as it used to be, but I believe the model you have came configured with 1GB of memory factory installed on the motherboard. The user-accessible slot can be configured with additional memory up to 1GB. If you add 1GB then the machine will have 2GBs or user RAM. The user-accessible slot is in a covered recess on the side of the computer. I don't know if you need to remove any screws to remove the cover or if it will just pop open for you.
