Q: iTunes could not connect to the iPhone because an invalid response was received from the device.
Just purchased an iPhone 7 today and received the error message "iTunes could not connect to the iPhone because an invalid response was received from the device." Don't know what this means and I've never had this problem with any of my previous iPhones. Thanks.

what do I do now?
It doesn't matter what you used to update iTunes. What it requires now is iTunes 12.5.1 which requires OSX 10.9.5 or higher. If you want to sync to that phone you have to buy a newer computer. Yes, it would be nice if Apple gave people specific warning except I think there is some Apple mindset whereby they simply cannot believe any would ever use a computer that cannot run the newest operating system, so it never occurs to them to add in that feature. It's the same in an Apple Store where they will sell you a phone, not first thinking to ask if your current computer will support it. I have told them I use a G4 from 2002 and it's like I drove up to the place in a horse and buggy -- "Oh yeah, I used one of those when I was in grade school." Look at all the pictures of Apple customer service people. They are in their twenties and at that age a computer like yours was probably introduced when they started dating.
You're not the first to come here with this situation and probably not the last.
