Q: How to tell Time Machine I don't have this external drive anymore?
I keep all of my personal documents on an external drive that's always plugged into my Mac via USB. For the purpose of this question, we'll call this drive "Lagavulin".
In addition, I have a Time Capsule. TimeMachine is set to save its backups onto the Time Capsule.
TimeMachine makes regular backups of my entire system, including the operating system, apps and settings on the Mac's internal drive, as well as my personal documents that are on the external drive "Lagavulin".
A few weeks ago, "Lagavulin" was behaving erratically, so I bought a new external drive to replace it. Let's call it "Ardbeg".
I mirrored all of my files from "Lagavulin" to "Ardbeg". Then I threw "Lagavulin" in the trash because its performance was becoming worse and worse. The transfer went very well, and all of my files are fine.
I set TimeMachine to include "Ardbeg" in its future backups.
The problem is that TimeMachine still thinks I own "Lagavulin", even though I no longer plug it in. When I enter TimeMachine and look at what's saved in it, it always includes the files on "Lagavulin" in its most current backups. So every current backup has "MacintoshHD" (system files), "Ardbeg" (personal files) and "Lagavulin" (old version of personal files).
How can I tell TimeMachine that I no longer own "Lagavulin"?
