I have had an issue on my phone were at some point, probably as part of trying to streamline my iCloud account, my contacts have all merged into a single contact called apple inc. All the numbers are still in this contact under numbers, and the names are all there as part of the notes, but all in one big contact. I have tried to find a solution online but with keywords such as merged and transfer error, I am getting only messages regarding merging off iCloud accounts.
I believe the error has occurred when the information was stored as a certain type of database or certain file type, the data has switched columns, so the name and iPhone type have switched place. All the contacts have the name Apple Inc which should be in another column, and all the names have gone to the notes column.
I cannot find the contacts when I look in contacts, messages all say they are from Apple Inc in messenger and other apps. However when a contact calls into my phone the name will appear and will also be present in my missed calls. Some contacts remain as normal though, but I cannot pin point why.
Most of the contacts were gained on an iPhone around 3 years ago, I had a sony for 1 1/2 years, and have been on an iPhone 4 for the last few months. The error occurred some time into having the iPhone when I was trying to sort out iCloud as I had many multiple contacts. I do not remember exactly what I did. The problem happens across all platforms, iCloud, iPad, computer and phone.
