Q: iOS10 - News widget : "Couldn't Load Stories"

Does anyone know why this might be?

I'm located in France, but using my iPhone 6 in English.  After initial update to iOS10, stories were showing up in the widget, too many in fact.  I turned them off, but then discovered other news categories and turned those on.  They work fine in the News app (as do some of the originals, not all because of region) but nothing is showing in the widget (swipe-right from Home screen).

iPhone 6, iOS 9.2.1

i experience the same thing on my iPhone after allowing the news app to access my location. After reading this thread, I tried changing my region to Malaysia as I reside here and the news widget  is loaded with stories, local stories. I guess that's the current fix if you want to have the stories loaded.

    Yes. It does.

I Posted this partially accepted solution but today, 24 hours latter the widget stopped fetch news And went blank. The only way to make it work once again was going back and changing the region back and fort. I think this means there is a bug. I a.m. Not in the mood to factory restore my iPhone. So far this is the only widget that is behaving in this particular pattern.

Try this...it worked for me here in the US with a US account on my iPad Pro (see my previous post):

In iOS 10 since you can now delete stock apps, you can "delete" and reinstall the News app (yeah I know it doesn't completely delete it from the system, but I figured why not give it a try).  Surprisingly that corrected the issue.

I deleted the News app as I would with any other problematic app, then I rebooted the phone (I don't know if the reboot was necessary, but I figured it couldn't hurt).  I opened the App Store, searched for "News" and redownloaded the News app.  After reinstalling and launching the app, the News widget began to function normally.  So far so good for 24 hours.

If all your notification and location settings are correct and the News widget isn't working, before you try a drastic step like a restore, try a delete and reinstall.  Post here if that works.

That was the first thing I tried, but the News app doesn't show up in the Apple Store if you're not in the appropriate region, at least it didn't for me.  This is why I then went on to do the Restores, to get it back.

I had the same issue. Note that I am living temporarily in the U.S. and usually use a non-U.S. Apple ID. What fixed it for me was the following:

    1. Log out of the non-U.S. Apple ID under Settings -> iTunes & App Store
    2. Log in with a U.S. Apple ID under Settings -> iTunes & App Store
    3. Reboot the device
    4. Log out of the U.S. Apple ID under Settings -> iTunes & App Store

All 4 steps were necessary before the News widget would work. After these, I could log in with my non-U.S. Apple ID and reboot the device without the News widget breaking.

In continuation to my previous solution, I just wanted to let you all know that it's been more than 24 hours and my widget still works

    SOLUTION:

    1) Make sure your location is set to US.

    2) Remove the News widget.

    3) Delete the News app.

    4) Reset.

    5) Download the News app -- you have to have a US iTunes account for that.

    6) Activate the widget.

Has has worked for me since.

    I Fixed it!!!!

I don't know how it's working perfectly now - but all I did was open the news app, read some articles, click all the bottom sections (just generally played around with it all for a minute) then just restart my iPhone normally then straight away go in and change the order of the widgets (news is now second from the bottom) and it worked!

Australian edition. Unsure if Australia was supported or not by Apple News to begin with but the widget never worked for me after updating to IOS 10 - but after that trick

    above it's now working!!

I'm in the exact same boat you are. iPad Pro, iOS 10, United States, tried rebooting and restoring even. The News app also works perfectly well for me, just not the widget. It's bugging the **** out of me and hopefully Apple notices and fixes this very promptly.

Had the same issue on my iPhone SE, the iPad mini 2 (the older of the two devices) seemed fine! Tried all the above suggestions of altering region, toggling various buttons plus reboots but no good. The only way was to delete and re-install the News app - being in the UK it was available for download so no problem.

That was 12hrs ago, used iPhone this morning and the widget updated with latest news as soon as entering Notification Centre, so keeping fingers crossed, thanks Jet Pilot for the heads up on this one.

Ok, to get the NEWS widget working i had to switch regions. When I try to change my region into US - it wants my credit card information but there's no "NONE" option.

I used to buy some apps few years ago but I removed my credit card info after that.

Now I can't switch to the US store without a credit card. What kind of idiocy it that?!
