Q: Will this work?

I posted about an hour ago about losing apps on my iMac and some not working at all. I did a disk check and everything was OK but Time Machine wont' open either.

Fortunately, I have a MacBook Pro that's pretty much a clone of the iMac. I use Dropbox for storing documents so differences in docs between them won't be an issue.

I backup the MacBook Pro by copying all the files onto a USB drive.

Can I simply copy all those files back to my iMac, replacing the duplicates with the working versions, to get it working again or is it more complicated than that?

Thanks!

In you other thread > iMac losing apps--what's going on?

I thought about asking, are logged into your normal user account or a different user account...?

    OK good, next question then.

You said' "I did a disk check and everything was OK"

Have you recently downloaded or are you using any kind of third party AV or Mac Cleaning programs...?

EtreCheck is a great tool for rooting out problems, run it and post back with the results.

I installed Webroot AV after reading about Macs being vulnerable to the encryption Trojan. I've been running it for at least six months before today with no issues, though. I'll try the program you recommended when I get home tonight, but would it be simpler to just replace all the files on my iMac from my Macbook backup?

What won't open? Time Machine Preferences or...?

"Webroot" is useless and can only interfere with your Mac's normal operation. Uninstall it according to its instructions.

"Webroot" may prove difficult to eradicate, a notorious problem with ill-conceived or poorly written software in general, and "Webroot" in particular. When I installed it for testing purposes I followed their developer's instructions to drag it to the Trash. Doing so proved ineffective in removing all its system-altering components. Since its uninstallation instructions failed, I completely erased the volume on which it was installed.

This Webroot community help forum reply dated 04-05-2015 09:38 AM states that their technical support personnel may be able to assist in removing it. I did not do that, electing instead to erase the Mac to ensure its complete eradication. Therefore the only remedial action I can recommend would be to erase that Mac and reconfigure it as I did, installing only the software you require, and omitting the junk. Let me know if you need help doing that.

Avast and other AV software are nothing but trouble for OS X.

    To uninstall Webroot SecureAnywhere,

    1. Shut down SecureAnywhere by clicking the Webroot icon in the menu bar and selecting Shut Down SecureAnywhere. ...

    2. Open the Finder by clicking the Finder icon in the dock.

    3. Open the Applications directory.

    4. Click and drag the Webroot SecureAnywhere program icon into the Trash in the dock.

Take a look at just a few samples:

To be honest, I can not recommend anything else until you post an EtreCheck report for us to look at.

Did you attempt to uninstall it? As I wrote their instructions (excerpted by den.thed) didn't work when I evaluated that product. How would you like to proceed?

I'm not sure where that's coming from. Webroot isn't even showing up on my system anymore, i.e. there's no icon for it in applications, it's not showing in the top bar as a running app the way it did in the past, etc.

You're experiencing exactly what I described earlier. That is the consequence of installing system-altering junk, and "Webroot" is only one example. You can see for yourself that it is doing nothing but burdening your Mac's CPU, and crashing.

In overly simple terms it broke your Mac.

Your choices amount to contacting its developer for assistance, or erasing the Mac completely and restoring it from a backup created prior to that alteration. I chose the latter. If that's what you want to do, please let me know.

    Thanks!

    I did two things.

    1. I completely reformatted my Mac and started from scratch.

    2. I'm only loading software as I need it since I've realized I have a lot of stuff I haven't used in awhile.

Quick question, I *do* like to use text macros a lot (I'm a writer by profession) and have been using a program called "TextExpander". That's one of the programs that asks for special permission to access the system. Is this the type of program that could cause problems? Also, can programs that install license files mess up the system similar to the roott kit crap that happened to my PC in the 90s when playing Sony CDs?

Possibly, but I doubt it due to the apparent lack of any modifications to that system related to "TextExpander".

From what I was able to determine there are different versions or "tiers" of that product with different licensing requirements. I don't know how they accomplish their copyright protection, so it is possible a license key is stored somewhere in your system. That in itself should not cause any trouble, but since there are so many ways of hiding that information, that possibility cannot be completely ruled out. I doubt it though.

That particular copy-protection scheme (assuming they use it) has been a bad idea, and it goes back to the 90s as you wrote. It's for those reasons that Apple has been pushing developers and users toward the App Store distribution model. If they intend to compete in the Mac market, TextExpander's developers need to adapt to it. They're long overdue.

I believe the only App Store product they offer at present is for iOS: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/textexpander/id1075927186

On the other hand "Webroot" and similar ill-conceived junk fundamentally modifies a system at a privileged level, which results in near-limitless possibilities for system instability. Such modifications also result in radically increasing a system's exposure to various threats and exploits. You might need "TextExpander" for your work, but no one needs "Webroot".

Thanks. I have a couple friends who develop Mac apps and they said that they have two main problems with using the App store:

    1. There's no way to give owners of a previous version a discount for upgrading to a new version.

    2. There's no way to give users a free trial of the product.

I personally like the idea of being able to load all of my apps from one place. For my gaming PC, I use Steam for that reason. Buy a new machine, just go to steam and install everything at once. Much easier than hunting for license keys or install disks etc.
