Q: stop Mail from connecting to a pop account

I have several devices, iOS, Mac OS and PC, all connecting to a couple different email accounts. I've recently started all of them using IMAP, rather than POP, to collect mail from the servers.

There are quite a few older emails that my mail clients have collected over the years as POP accounts. Some of these emails are no longer on the server, so the new IMAP accounts on the email clients don't show them.

So when I made new IMAP accounts on my mac, I left the POP accounts in place, rather than delete them. I don't want to "disable" the old POP accounts, because I still might want to search the emails stored there, but I don't want them to continue collecting mail from my mail servers.

How do I keep the old POP accounts in my list of accounts on the left hand side of my Mail app, but set them to not retrieve any new mail from the mail server?

While we're at it, is there a way to do this in Thunderbird for PC as well?

Thanks

Mac mini, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)
