Q: microphone on 4g IPod too low

I have had my iPod 4g close to 8months now. And all of a sudden I cannot my voice recordings because apparently my microphone volume is too low. I have reset the settings but it didnt help. Anybody has ideas on how to fix the microphone. And can I take it back to the shop I bought it from even when I can't find the original receipt

    MadrickBay's toothbrush trick just fixed this problem for me.


    Now, if only that would work for my malfunctioning Home button. I've already had it fixed twice, and the only problem is lint from my pocket.

    Bingo!  Dirt in the Microphone hole. I had to use a very fine wire and push it 1/32" into the hole next to the rear camera lens figuring I had nothing to lose. I was considering putting a new battery into my old iPod, but the muffled audio pickup while shooting video caused me to hesitate.  Ordering that new battery now!  ( I still have a 20G Click Wheel iPod c. 2004 in working order, too)
