Q: Is there a combo patch for security Update 2016-001

I'm trying to install security patch El Capitan 2016-01 through the app store, but when the update tries to restart, the reboot just stops with Finder running (I can Alt-TAB) but no other ability to progress on the reboot. I also downloaded the PKG for the upgrade but it had the same impact.

In the past, I've worked around this issue using a combination upgrade (combo upgrade). There does not appear to be one for this security patch.

Any guidance on either problem (no clean restart) or the other (combo) welcome.

The only combo I know of is:

Download OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 Combo Update

Yeah, that's the same update that is delivered through the appstore (about 386M) - I have the same problem with that one as well (unable to restart).

Looking at the boot log (below) the only messages appear to be from Cisco VPN software. I might try uninstalling that and then installing the patch.

Try the download. I tried the download from the App Store and it failed. When I downloaded using the above link it worked.

As mentioned in the original post, I already downloaded the .pkg file and tried to install from that (the one that is 414.9MB when downloaded) and that also just sat there on restart as with the app store download. So, I think the issue is less with the form or means of the upgrade but the restart process.

As mentioned, in the past, I have not had this problem with the "combo" patches (perhaps they use a different hook to install on reboot). I'm not certain it affects this particular mac of the ~4 I've upgraded in the house, but it's been a persistent issue with every patch/upgrade.

I believe that I've found a work around. I had first tried suggestions on other threads to reboot and use option-R to do a disk repair - no problems were found and that didn't fix it. Then, I followed another suggestion to reboot using "safe mode" (hold SHIFT on reboot). This prevents the loading of different extensions on startup.

I was then able to install the package and now when I go to "updates", I no longer see the 2016-001 security update as pending. However, my O/S version is still 10.11.6 and I don't know of a way to verify that the patch was actually installed.

If it shows : 10.11.6 (15G1004), your computer is up to date.

Mine didn't show the (15G1004) in the Version display, but going to About This Mac -> System Report -> Software pane, I see that it matches what you show.

So, looks like the fix work.

This is the one, good upon you!

I could not get either the App Store or the Combo Update to load on my Mini with dual partitions, the download would stop at about 25-30% of the process. The link from Apple has sorted out the problem. OS 10.11.6 now updated, including Safari to 9.1.3.
