Q: App Store Issues/computer issue

I am trying to download Xcode from the app store but receive the message "not enough disk space". Problem is that there is plenty of disk space. Any suggestions?

MacBook, iOS 10

What is your idea of plenty of disk space? The Mac App Store won't let you over fill your HDD by downloading large files that may need a lot more room to expand the installer and complete the installation than the installed app may take.

xcode 8 says it is 4.43 gb. My computer has 14.5 gb out of 249.68.

Your HDD is already too full. You can't fill an HDD all the way up. Different "experts" say different amounts, but it needs anywhere from 15 to 30% of free space for the operating system to do its work. That means you should have 35 to 60 GB of free space on your HDD. Your heading for hard drive issues and possibly failure if you don't get stuff off of that drive.
