Q: Problems with mail menus greyed out.

My mail app does not show a main window any more. It starts and shows the menu bar but as said no preview window shows. I tried most tricks one can think of and none works.

I created another user and mail works there.

The thing is that  I had put a SSD in the super drive slot of my Macbook Pro 15 late 2011 so the Apps are on the SSD and the rest is on the old HD including the User I have all my files in. To really test where the fault lies I would need to create a user on the old HD. Can anyone tell me how to do that?

I am running Sierra beta as I was hoping this update would maybe bring my Mail app back.

The problem started with Mail continuously downloading more mail and eating up all my storage space. I did something that stopped that but shortly after Mail did not open anymore. It was a hectic time and I do not remember what I did or if Mail stopped immediately or  a little while after........

Any help is very very welcome!

Sorry if this is obvious, but did you try. Command-0 (that is a zero not the letter O)?

It is the shortcut for showing the "Message Viewer".

If I understand correctly, you have the SSD as your boot drive, but have moved the user home folder(s) to the HD, is that correct?

I assume you have no problem with logging in, so that part ought to be all right.

You did "something" to make Mail stop downloading a lot of stuff, and that seems to have made things not work well.

Not knowing what you did, it is hard to say whether that may have caused the current problem, and harder to figure out how to fix it. It would help to know how many accounts and which types they are.

If you have just  one account and is an IMAP or Exchange account, you may try deleting it and recreating it, since the mail will be stored in the server anyway. Whatever you do, make sure you have a full backup before anything else.

Yes the ssd is the drive it boots from and the rest is on the hd. It has worked well for some years so that is not the problem. yes stupid not to remember what I did, but as I said I am not sure that it actually caused the problem. I do have multiple mail accounts all of them imap and I have indeed gone through taking them away and adding, taking away the container files, de activating iCloud etc.

To further narrow it down it might be interesting to try to create a new user on the HD but I do not know how to do this.
