Q: Login Problems with Yosemite

I've posted this question before and there were no solutions suggested, so I'm reposting in the hopes someone else my see it and offer a solution.

I'm  currently using an iMac 27", late 2012 running OS X 10.11.5.  I have an intermittent problem that keeps occurring after waking the iMac from sleep or changing users using fast user switching.  When I try to enter my password, I type my password, and nothing appears at first in the password field.  Then, text is automatically entered in the password field and fills the entire field like if I was holding a key down that repeats a letter.  I can delete the text, and try to enter my password again, and the same thing happens.  No text is entered initially, then text automatically appears.  I don't know what the text is, since it is hidden from view and appears as dots.  The only cure for this behavior is to force a shut down of my iMac by holding in the power button until it shuts down. This problem was pretty intermittent, but has been occurring more frequently lately. Has anyone else experienced this?  Is there a cure?

Thanks!

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

Could it be that you have a sticky key on your keyboard, are you able to plug another keyboard in to test.

If not open an application that allows you to enter text, and test by entering your password to see if a key is

    sticking and therefore repeating.

Thanks for the reply and interesting suggestion.  I would not have thought about that as a problem.  I checked all the keys on my wireless keyboard, and there are no sticky keys.  I'll have to look somewhere else.

I've mistakenly labeled this post with Yosemite, but I'm actually using El Capitan.

    Thanks again.

Thanks for the reply.  This did not solve the problem.  My Automatic login preference was already set to off.  Something else is going on.  It is an intermittent  problem.  It doesn't happen all the time, so it is hard to diagnose.  I can't find anything to make the login problem occur, it just happens.

    Thanks again.

If computer is joined to network servers , you can choose options from this article : OS X El Capitan: Allow network users to log in to your Mac

Go to users and groups , login options - network account server - click on join .

    Thanks !

My iMac is only connected to my home wifi and not to any network servers.  There are only two users, my wife and myself and we each have our own login accounts .

    Thanks for the suggestion.

Are you able to try another keyboard, borrow one perhaps, just to see if it is a problem with your keyboard. A wired one

would useful to rule out any bluetooth issues.

You could also try updating to 10.11.6 by downloading and installing the Combo version from here,

Download OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 Combo Update,,the advantage of installing the Combo update is that it resets certain files and may help to iron out any niggles.

As you are on 10.11.5 you may want to stay on that version and not update, so here is a link to the 10.11.5 Combo update, Download OS X El Capitan 10.11.5 Combo Update.

It is not a problem to install either of these updates, just make sure you have made a backup of your Mac.

Download whichever one you choose, and once downloaded, double-click to install.

Fill in your user name and password

    • If you previously stored your user name and password for the website, Safari automatically provides the information. Click in the user name field, then choose your user name.If there’s no stored information for the website, do either of the following:
      • If another website uses the same user name and password, you can use its stored information. Click in the password field, click the AutoFill Key , then choose Other Passwords. Select the website with the user name and password you want to use, then click Fill.
      • If the website’s user name and password are unique, store the information so Safari can automatically provide it next time. Enter the user name and password, or generate a password (described below), then click Save Password when asked.
    • As per article the user must have followed these steps and if auto fill username and passwords is unchecked the password will not be saved for that particular website .
    • The user can select  username and click on remove , and in the same way for password and click on remove ( as shown in the screen shot ) .

    Thanks !

In security and privacy : general - require password immediately after sleep or screen saver begins as  immediately has no connection with login.

And he has already said in posts that automatic login is off in users and groups  , he has admin account or standard account ( not sure ) .

If he enable fast user switching and has multiple computers on the same network and is not having admin account the other users can send spams to his computer .

But how is it possible he typed  first alphabet of the password at login window of user name and password  and it fills all of it , by magic itself .

    Thanks !

He is holding only one key ( say A ) , and not leaving the key so in the password field  A  will be be typed continuously until he releases the key .
