Q: "Send as Text Message" feature removed in iOS10?

in iOS9 and below, you could long press on an iMessage and select "Send as Text Message" to force iMessages to send the message as an SMS. This was especially useful when you know the recipient has limited access to wifi/data and you want your message to reach them urgently.

Now when I long press on a message I can respond with a thumbs up, like, etc, but no more "Send as Text Message". Why is that?

iPhone 5s, iOS 10, null

It seems to be more robust and automatic now and senses when an iMessage isn't going through.  Although it was handy, it was a pain to wait to see if the message would go through, then press and hold, and then get repeated reports that the message failed to deliver when you know it had gone through.  I've not had a single issue since updating.

    Brian,

Can you provide any specifics of what "robust and automatic" means?  I tried texting my sister yesterday who has had an android phone for years and it sent it as an iMessage (and didn't seem to retry as sms within about 15 minutes).

I am about to send my High School senior son across the country on a college tour with an iPhone with no data plan, and I am now worried about not being able to send messages to him (unless he constantly pesters people for their wifi password).  This is a serious issue to me.

I say 'robust and automatic' because I've not had any issues at all.  iMessages have been sent as text messages without fail so far.  I'm sorry if your experience after the update has been different.

If I try to iMessage someone with no data traffic left, regular old SMS was always the backup plan. This "robust and automatic sense" definitely does not work between iPhones in my house fleet of i-devices.

Since I posted this, for some reason, the "send as text message" option has re-emerged as an option for texts to my son.  So perhaps "robust and automatic" just means it takes a little usage analysis before it'll give you the option of sending as a text?  Not sure, but I'm glad its back for me in any case.
