Q: Transfer music from Mac to iPod

Numerous attempts to transfer music -  fail

Each time iPod is recovered, then continue and sync selected songs (one only each attempt as a test) no track appears after ejection

Tried to repair disk via Mac disk utility using mount/unmount icon - message is "unable to unmount volume for repair"

Suspect disk is corrupt from the iPod Smart Data

Retracts : 202, Reallocs : 1229, Pending Sectors : 3

Not sure what to do next - Help please !

Have erased iPod in Disk Utility, followed by restoring the iPod in iTunes, however after sometime a message appeared - Unknown error occurred 1429

Looked this error up on Apple Support, i am sure generally the fix suggested has been tried.

I have followed the procedure given in your recent reply.

My new USB cable arrived today, but has you predicted it does not appear to have changed anything.

When it is possible to transfer a song, everything looks OK, the song is shown in iTunes as being on the iPod, but after ejecting and disconnecting there is no music or anything on the iPod

I think the iPod is probably corrupted to a degree beyond repair.

    Kind Regards

The cause is probably the hard drive being faulty.  If you want to continue using iPod, (instead of replacing it with another hard drive) you can consider using commonly available flash-based storage, in the form of compact flash card or SD card (on an adapter).  For 5th gen and later "classic" iPods, this web site has relevant information.

Currently looking at the flash based storage information you kindly provided a link for.

Have tried another attempt to transfer music, prior to which i did an iPod erasure in Disk Utility, however during restoring the iPod in iTunes the message appeared stating iPod cannot be restored because it is busy. Perhaps this also points to a faulty hard drive.

I have an iPad with my music library loaded - is it possible to transfer music to my iPod ?

    Kind Regards

iPods (except for iPod touch) are synced using iTunes running on a Mac or Windows PC.  An iPad cannot transfer songs to your iPod (or connect to it in any way).

The "busy" error usually means some other process is accessing iPod's storage; be sure to quit Disk Utility, if it's still running, and try doing a Restore again.  If that's not it, eject and disconnect iPod, and put it into into Disk Mode

How to put your iPod into disk mode - Apple Support

You may also want to restart your Mac.  Run iTunes and connect iPod in Disk Mode.  iTunes should prompt you to do a Restore with a message about "recovery."  Try doing a Restore this way.

    Success !!!

The iPod now has all my current  music library transferred from the Mac Book, and is playing as i type.

Not 100% sure how it came about, but retraced all the steps you recommended, erasing in disk utility, recovering in iTunes then sync.

Thank you so much for your advice, i definitely would not of resolved this problem without your help.

    Kind Regards
