    Create an external midi track

in the track inspector - (port) make sure the Roland is selected and midi channel set to all.

when you play the track it will be routed to the 501.

If you don't hear it - make sure the Roland is configured to accept midi in playback

Thanks for the reply.  I may have worded the question wrong. I can hear the track playing back through the Roland.

I am trying to hear the recorded Piano track through my playback speakers. The recorded track is there but I can't hear it on playback speakers. Does your suggestion address that? I tried your suggestion, no luck hearing the track through playback.

When you say the recorded piano track is there... are you referring to the midi that is recorded or that you have recording the analog signal from the 501 onto an audio track in logic?

Do you see a waveform or midi on the track that won't play?

I'm going directly into Logic, Midi output on Roland into USB on iMac. The waveform is there, the track is recorded but I cannot hear through playback.

    thanks again

Midi isn't a waveform - it's only the information necessary to have something else produce the sound.

do you want the exact sound the Roland is producing - it you don't record on an software instrument track and assign any instrument you want to it.

IF you want to record the exact Roland sound - you need an audio interface to connect the analog output of the Roland to so you can record it into logic. Right now you are only recording the midi data the Roland sends, not the sound the island generates. Do you have an audio interface?
