Q: Can No Longer Edit Music in 4th Generation Nano

I have a 4th Generation iPod Nano. Previously, I could go into iTunes and edit the music on my Nano.

That option is no longer available in iTunes.

iTunes sees my Nano and the music on it, but when I highlight a song the delete option is not available

The add music is not available.

Am I missing something or is this known as planned obsolescence?

Can anyone help me?

Thank you for your assistance.

If you want to manually add/remove songs on the iPod, it must be set to Manually manage music and videos.  This setting is on iPod's Summary settings screen in iTunes.  This screenshot shows the upper left corner of my iTunes window, with iPod's device button (circled in red)

    iPod device button general.png

Click that device button, to show iPod's Summary settings screen.  On that screen, there's a setting (checkbox) for Manually manage music and videos.  It needs to checked, if you want to manually update content on iPod. Click Apply if you make change.

NOTE:  If you see warning message about erasing your iPod, do not proceed (unless iPod's songs are all in your current iTunes library so you can re-add).

If your problem is something else, please post back with more details.

Thank you for your response. My computer is a Windows machine,

Thank you for your response. I do not get the nano image on my iTunes page. I believe it is because I have a Windows 10 computer. With over 3,800 songs on my 16GB Nano it would be too time consuming to deal with individual songs. I think as Apple updated iTunes they did something that took away my ability to edit the music.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks again.

I do not get the nano image on my iTunes page.

So iPod's device button does not appear in iTunes window (near upper left corner as shown in my screenshot)?

    Earlier, you said

iTunes sees my Nano and the music on it, but when I highlight a song the delete option is not available

How are you seeing that (in iTunes), if iPod does not appear in iTunes?  If you can see iPod in iTunes, you should see it's device button.  (The icon on the device button looks different, depending on iPod model.)

I believe it is because I have a Windows 10 computer.

It should work with Windows 10.  Do you have the latest version of iTunes installed?  It should be something like version 12.4.

My Nano is in the iTunes Sidebar when I attach it to my computer. The sidebar shows the Nano, songs, etc. However what was there previously is gone. Before many iTunes updates I had the option to delete music or add a new playlist. I do not have that option any longer.

Those iPod options (previously accessed from sidebar in iTunes 11 and earlier) are now accessed by clicking the device button in iTunes 12.  Find the device button, near upper left corner of iTunes window, as shown in screenshot from my first reply.  Click it.  Then you see something like this

    iPod Summary Settings.png

This is iPod's Summary settings screen.  On this screen, along left side of window, in the sidebar, under Setting, click Music.  That shows you the iPod's Music settings screenScreen Shot 2016-09-10 at 4.35.19 PM.png

where you can set up syncing for music.

Kenichi, Thank you for your suggestions.  When I open iTunes and connected my Nano to the program the summary category is not there. Under the title Harvey's iPod are the following subcategories, Music, Movies, TV Shows, Audiobooks, and the name of the playlist I created. Could it be due to the fact I have Windows 10 not an Apple operating system?

Did you read my previous reply, the one that starts

I ask because you replied to my first reply, not the my last reply.  I think I answered your question in that reply.  If you are reading this in your email only, click go to discussion and read through this entire topic.  Take a look at that previous post (marked Apple recommended).

I read what you wrote. There is no device button as your screen shot indicates so I clicked on EDIT and found the word Devices. I then clicked on Devices and what I got was a drop down menu that stated the following, Sync, Transfer Purchases, Backup, Restore From Backup. Without a Device Button I cannot follow your instructions. Why is the Device Button missing?

What version of iTunes do you have installed?  If it's the current version, and you can see iPod in the sidebar of iTunes window, the iPod's device button should be there (near upper-left corner of iTunes window).  Icon on button looks different, depending on iPod model.

I then clicked on Devices and what I got was a drop down menu that stated the following, Sync, Transfer Purchases, Backup, Restore From Backup.

Those commands mostly apply to iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch).

Kenichi before I posted today I downloaded the latest version, 12.5.1.21. I wanted to be certain that I was not missing something. When I connect the Nano the image is to the left of the words Harvey's iPod. I click on the image and I get a drop down window that says the following, Eject, Transfer Purchases, Reset. The iPod image is not next to the word Music.

Can you take a screenshot of your iTunes windows, showing what you describe (after connecting iPod)?  You can look up (Internet search on) how to take a screenshot in Windows, if you're not familiar with how.  Drag screenshot image file into your next reply (or use insert image button along top of text entry area).
