Q: iPhone 7 128GB - GPS drops and No service errors

I have the iPhone 7 128 GB on Verizon with major network issues, particularly when I run my GPS.  It's dropping to no service in areas I know I have full bars of 4G LTE and dropping the GPS signal.   When I run my GPS (Tried Waze/Google/Apple) it will drop for about 3-5 minutes at a time...a big problem when traveling in areas you are not familiar with.  When it does come back, it will often get stuck in 3G, again in areas I know are well covered in 4G LTE.  I've tried resetting network connections already several times and rebooted.  Lets hope this gets fixed.  I'm running iOS 10.0.1

iPhone 7, iOS 10

    Hi toebone7,

I understand that you are regularly losing both cellular and GPS signal for several minutes at a time. I know that it's important to have a good connection whenever available, so I'm happy to help.

Your troubleshooting is off to a great start by restarting the iPhone and resetting network settings. Before continuing any further, I'd recommend backing up your iPhone:
How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Once you've got a backup, I'd recommend resetting all settings on your iPhone. Doing this won't erase any content, but it will reset your Wi-Fi settings, passcode, and background image. To do this, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. Once it is done rebooting, reconfigure your settings and test it out again.

If you continue to have issues, you may want to restore your iPhone as new, and test it without a backup to narrow down the cause:
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups - Apple Support

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Cheers!

I'm having the same problems, starting immediately after receiving the phone.

Tried soft resets, hard resets, restore from backup, and got a new SIM from Verizon.  Still no change in behavior.

In one case, I was standing in the Verizon store (with an on-site cell site) and I was stuck in 3g with 5 bars.

Need a fix, or the phone is going back I'll go back to an iPhone 6.  Should have known better than get a new phone at launch......

I just bought an Iphone SE because I couldn't stand the size of the Iphone 6s and didn't the 7 because of the non-existent aux port.... Any ways I am having the same issue you are having SINCE updating to IOS10, never had this issue with IOS9. I found soft resets fix this issue as LTE show back up, so I am assuming this is just a bug that Apple needs to find and fix. I am using T-mobile though, not Verizon.

Something tells me though this isn't an isolate issues.

This same exact thing is happening to my husband and I since we both got the 7. We're on Verizon. Running 10.0.1. Our 6S's didn't do this. Ours seem to get stuck in 3G or No Service right after we leave a wifi network. It's very frustrating.

I'm having a similar problem but only with the GPS. Carrier is Sprint, iOS is 10.0.1

Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Strava (so far) all seem to lose their way for minutes at a time. I've tried every fix I've read above and no change.

I'm charging up the old iPhone 5 and will try it with the Strava app tomorrow.

BTW, I've been using iPhone 6s for a year or so, right up to last week (iOS 9), with the same GPS dependent apps and no problems. Because multiple apps are having the problem I'm assuming it's either the hardware or iOS 10.

@brenden dv, not sure if you can forward pictures to apples support team or if you are on it but below are some picture of my mail app, lock screen, and maps telling me to turn on cellular data when the signal shows its there but for some reason its not going through. I did a soft reset (home and power button) and the problem was fixed, but this around the 8th time I have had to do it. Please let me know what entity to to forward these pictures to if you do not handle this so they can work to find the bug, thanks.

I have the same problem and am now seeing something new.  Problems noted so far - no cell service and no gps appear fairly often while driving.  It feels like it's happening when the phone is switching between cell sites or perhaps a public wifi. Today I will experiment with turning off the wifi. Switching to airplane mode does not always correct the problem.  It may require multiple activations or a period of time in airplane mode.  The newest issue I discovered yesterday was playing back a long voicemail.  I was home, so not moving, and on my home wifi. I started the playback and after a few seconds it would stop and return to the main voicemail screen. This happened repeatedly but finally played all the way through. That too feels like the phone is switching as the Verizon bars jump up and down.

I've owned every iPhone and love all my Apple products, but this time it feels very messy.  Is it the phone? Is it IOS 10? A combo? I don't know, but I do know that suddenly I can't trust this phone providing uninterrupted service.  It would be great if Apple acknowledged this issue and provided some thoughts as to cause and cure.

I Have the same exact problem.  I use waze every day on my commute and have never had issues with the signal being dropped.  Now with the iPhone 7 on Verizon, I lose signal several times during my commute.  This is a huge problem if I was relying on the GPS in an unfamiliar territory.

I Know I am beating a dead horse here, but I have the same issue. More testing to narrow down the problem coming soon.

Since iOS10.0.2, it still drops to "No Service" after leaving a WiFi connection, but seems to come back to service more often and sooner, BUT... It comes back to 3G and rarely goes back to LTE unless I cycle airplane mode.

Also, when driving, it seems like the iPhone is pinging wifi networks (for Assisted GPS), which then causes it to drop back to No Service followed by 3G.   Sometimes it will come back to LTE after several minutes (maybe a cell site change when driving), and sometimes it will stay in 3G forever unless I cycle airplane mode.

Same issue with running WAZE and losing service. I have to shut down WAZE and reboot or wait a few minutes and LTE comes back.  Have tried all the suggested fixes but nothing is working.  I've also contacted Apple Support and they say my hardware is fine. Verizon says to just exchange the phone, after suggesting erasing content and settings and restoring from cloud (which I did, but to no avail).  I'm going to give it another week to see if Apple or Verizon announce anything. Just wanted to add to the many voices here and hope that one of those two giant companies notices us!!

Steps taken - still having issues.

I went to the Apple store. They know about the problem but don't know if it's the phone or IOS 10. They replaced my phone asking me if I was willing to be contacted by Apple to help track down the problem.  No contact so far. When I commented that I was surprised to lose GPS signal, the genius shared that the phone relies heavily on cell tower triangulation in conjunction with the gps signal.  I guess this makes sense as the cell connections don't need a sky view.

100 mile drive immediately after getting 2nd phone. Same issues. Next stop Verizon. They too know about the issue. They replaced the SIM card.  While it feels like it may be happening a little less, it is still happening.

To me this is definitely a cell reception issue. In places where the service is poor instead of dropping to 3g or 1x which I'm now seeing with regularity, the phone loses connection until it connects with a stronger tower.

This never happened with my iPhone 6. Very frustrating.  Next test will be to use Waze on the phones side by side. I already know the answer but will try it nonetheless.

I hope they figure this out soon and it's not a design flaw of the antenna's.
