If you are having issues updating your Apple Watch to watchOS 3 from an earlier version, the following steps may help (try again after each):
- If you have not yet done so, update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS 10 (currently 10.0.1):
- On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > General > Usage > Software Update - delete any update file, if one is shown.
- Delete any beta profiles (on your iPhone and/or watch) and restart both devices (this only applies if you have ever participated in an Apple Beta Software Program).
- Restart both your iPhone and your watch:
- Close all open apps on your iPhone:
- Double-click the Home button, then swipe up on each app preview to close it.
- Turn both devices off together, then restart your iPhone first;
- Close all open apps on your iPhone:
- Unpair and re-pair your watch:
- The Watch app on your iPhone takes a backup of your watch when unpairing via the app. Choose to Restore from Backup when offered the option during set up. Most data and settings will be restored, with some exceptions (eg Apple Pay cards, passcode).
