Q: El capitan 10.11.6 freezes always, working only in safemode

I have been using MacBook Pro Retina (Late 2013) for the past 2+ years without any issues. Recently I updated OS to El Capitan 10.11.6 because of the note about security issues.

After few days of update, while working suddenly laptop screen froze and I had to force reboot. But from then on, in normal mode the screen always freezes. It works only in safe-mode.

Details about my MacBook,

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013)

Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Startup Disk Macintosh HD

Graphics Intel Iris 1536 MB

Other details,

I have free space of 30+ GB in my Mac

No login items

Disabled Web GL in Safari as suggested in Apple discussion forum(Though Safari is not invoked on startup)

Also tried resetting PRAM and SMC, but nothing works out.

I did not try reinstalling OS, because I am not sure whether that will fix the issue. Also, I don't have a back-up of many of content available in the MacBook. Not able to connect to my external hard drive to take a back-up.

Anyone faces the same issue persistently ? Any help/input on how to fix the issue ?

Thanks,

Senthilkumar Arumugam

You can run an etrecheck report to look for conflicts.   https://etrecheck.com//

Post your results if you need help interpreting the output.

If you have Wacom  software installed it is a known issue with 10.11.5 and 10.11.6

    Thank you for the help.

I tried running Etrecheck and got the report with an adware and removed it from LaunchAgents.

    Adware:

        ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.applicationstats.AppStats.plist

        One adware file found. [Remove]

Here is the updated report and still the problem persists that the screen freezes in few seconds after login in normal mode,

    EtreCheck version: 3.0.4 (308)

    That's hard to miss.

Start by uninstalling Google. Follow its instructions. Back up your Mac prior to making any changes to it.

    Thank you John.

I had to install Google chrome back to reply in this discussion. Safari doesn't let me reply.

I thought that is ok, because the issue persists irrespective of chrome is removed or running.

I noticed one other pattern, that the freezing happens when the Mouse pointer goes idle for a moment or two. If I keep moving the Mouse pointer, I could manage to extend the time of freezing.

If you can correlate slow behavior to specific actions, read below.

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to do that read https://www.apple.com/support/backup/. To learn how to use Time Machine read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

If your Mac is momentarily unresponsive, consider the following.

Launch the Console app - it is in your Utilities folder. You can find it by selecting Utilities from the Finder's Go menu.

If the log list column on the left is not already displayed, show the log list by selecting Show Log List from Console's View menu. Select Show Toolbar if it is not already shown.

Locate system.log in the list and select it. Many date and time-stamped entries will appear, hundreds of them, and you must find the entries relevant to your Mac's problem.

To do that click the Clear Display button in the Toolbar. All previously displayed log entries will be disappear.

Next: Perform whatever actions cause the Mac to exhibit the slow behavior. If the problem is caused by errors logged by the system, the Console window will show them being recorded in system.log.

One or more of them, along with their time stamps, may reveal the reason for the problem you describe.

Copy and paste those log entries in a reply. If hundreds of the same repetitive messages appear, please edit them before posting. There should be no need for more than a few log entries.

Most of the entries will be cryptic but will contain information you might consider personal such as your Mac's name. If you do not want that information to appear, delete or obscure it when posting your reply. Leave enough information so that the entries can be deciphered.
