Q: Trouble installing iOS 10

I have iTunes 12.1.3 installed on my computer. When I try to upgrade my phone to iOS 10 it tells me to upgrade iTunes to 12.1.2. Isn't that downgrading? I currently still have Windows Vista. Is there a way to get iTunes 12.1.2 on Vista?

Is it possible that Windows Vista is only compatible with that version?

The current version of iTunes is 12.5.1. I don't believe Vista is supported any longer. You may be at the highest version your OS supports. You'll either need to use a different computer to update your phone or do the update over the air. On your phone, go to Settings>General>Software Update.

If it was me, I wouldn't upgrade the iPhone until I had a PC running Windows 7 or higher or a Mac that could run recent versions of iTunes. 12.1.3 is a year old, and you don't want 12.1.2 because it didn't even support iOS 9.

This is an odd prompt, since iTunes 12.5.1 appears to be the minimum version of iTunes that can install iOS 10 on a device. You can upgrade your device over the air and iOS 10.0.1 will work with iTunes 12.1.3. However it is possible that a future update to iOS 10 might break compatibility, and if something went wrong you would need to use a different computer to restore the operating system. If you want to upgrade I'd recommend you take both an iTunes and an iCloud backup. See also Archive iPhone backup in Windows.
