Q: Flying windows!!

Hi all,

I am not sure if this is a hardware or software question. I have a early 2011 macbook pro that is having some weird problems. They include things like the pointer flying across the screen and randomly copying words and opening the dictionary. Other problems I have seen are windows, whether it be Chrome or After Effects, flying up to all corners of the screen, usually just off screen so I have to close the app and reopen it again. I am not sure if this is hardware or software based. I just had the logic board replaced a month or two ago.

Any help is appreciated!!

If this is when your problems started then you need to take your MBP right back to the repair shop.  You have a 90 warranty for repairs.  Take advantage of your repair warranty before it expires.

If the above is not the case then do the following:

Open up a new account to determine to determine if the problem is system wide = software problem.  How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support

To rule out hardware problems, Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test

Last resort:  CLICKY CLICK---> EtreCheck & copy/paste your report.

”EtreCheck is a simple little app to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac.”

it has been happening for probably a year or so... far before i had the logic board replaced. I tried doing a malware scan and that seemed to help for a week or two, but now it is all back. I made a video fo some of the things that have been happening.... I hope it helps....

This isn't malware. It sounds like you're simply accidentally triggering some gestures on an Apple Trackpad or Magic Mouse.

    Hello alwaysontheline,

I don't see any malware installed. But I do see that you have turned off Gatekeeper security. You will likely get some malware soon. To turn security back on, go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General > Allow apps downloaded from: > "Mac App Store and identified developers"

What you describe sounds like a swelling battery. Yet you only have 30 cycles on your battery for a 2011 machine? That doesn't add up. Check the battery. When they get old and swell up, they put pressure on the underside of the track pad and can cause problems very similar to what you describe.

You're still using a MacBook Pro, and could be inadvertently triggering gestures without meaning to - by touching the trackpad - while typing. Go to System Preferences -> Trackpad to disable any gestures you don't want to use and see if that solves the problem.

Please consider the following three suggestions.

    1. Please read If your pointer is jumpy when you use a trackpad, Magic Trackpad, or Magic Mouse - Apple Support.
    2. Click the Bluetooth icon in your Mac's menu bar and select Open Bluetooth Preferences...
      • If an unknown input device appears in its Devices list, un-pair it by clicking the x adjacent to it.
    3. The following may also help isolate the problem. Please refer to OS X El Capitan: Mouse & Trackpad pane of Accessibility preferences.
      • To ignore trackpad input while using the mouse, choose (Apple menu) > System Preferences > Accessibility > Mouse & Trackpad. Select Ignore built-in trackpad when mouse or wireless trackpad is present.
      • Determine if that setting changes the behaviour you have been experiencing.
