Q: 10.11.6 update has crippled my Mac Pro

Having trouble after update to 10.11.6 - System preferences panes won't open, can't seem to find any app that will open - reports of apps damaged, including disk utility, console, etc. Restart and shut down/restart don't clear it. Came looking for reports - problem seems not universal. Had successful update on my MacBook Pro, but my Mac Pro now seems in dire straits. Went the Recovery route and re-inatalled OS X . 10.11.6 was installed. Still no joy. Application folder shows only a bare few, and not the Apple applications. Cannot open any System Preferences panes. Safe Boot does not complete. Hardware OK - can boot successfully to a clone (CCC) of only a few days ago. Could do a restore (from Time Machine BU), but that is a last resort. Looking for others facing similar challenges and their success at resolving the issues.

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), 3.2 GHz Quad Xeon 16GB RAM, 12TB HD

Have you seen or heard of Malware in Chrome, as an extension called "Chrome Virus Protection?"

I had the same as you, including that my Keychains could not be opened. Resetting these did the trick and restored functionality for me.

I have fought with this update myself. It appears that in the middle of the night my entire system just panics after this update. Yesterday, I finally reset NVRAM and reinstalled the previous image before this update but forgot that automatic updates was on. It updated and all day everything was fine, well into the evening. Around 0233 I was awakened by my system being on an all white screen and the fans running incredibly loud. Time Machine won't even back up anymore and I'm going to have to re-install the August 31st image again. And turnoff automatic updates.

Whatever this security update is supposed to fix it keeps crashing my system.

EVERYONE TRY THIS FIRST, SUPER EASY & FAST SOLUTION!!

This solution seems to have worked perfectly for me - MUCH easier and less time-consuming (1 minute or so?) than any other solution offered.

    1) Open a Finder Window, Click Shift-Command-g

    2) Type in /private/var/folders

    3) You'll see a couple folders in there -  drag them to the trash (need to enter admin password).

Do not delete the folder "folders"! And don't touch anything else in /private/var/

    4) RESTART

I am not sure if mine was 10.11.6 or a combo update (it seemed to update without asking after a startup) but I had same issue as the initial poster Brian - all my apps reported damage and would not open, changed to generic icons and computer very slow. I did exactly as stated above. All back to normal now.

I had no extra admin account and no way to add one, so couldn't try that solution. Also had no way of booting from another drive. Found this guys solution and tried it, worked like magic all on its own.

    Thanks Ivlike!!!

Can't even get to a finder folder. Just hangs up in mid install and now no access to a finder at all.
