Q: iTunes 12.5 on El Capitan can't see iPhone 6 plus iOS 10 for syncing, tethering, or charging over USB

iTunes won't even recognize the phone any more, even for charging. This might have started after the iTunes 12.5 update OR after the iOS 10 update. Can't really pin that down.

I tried reinstalling iTunes 12.5.1 from the Apple downloads disk image, but it did not fix. I'm on a MacBook Pro running 10.11.6 El Capitan and the USB ports work just fine with many other devices.

I have an iPhone 6 plus running iOS 10, and I reset the network settings. I find that I CAN tether over WiFi and Bluetooth, just not USB.

I've rebooted both the Mac and the iPhone many times.

Looking in the Console log on the Mac I see errors with "appleusb20xhciport" and "usbagent" so I suspect a mac-side USB issue. This has happened in the past, with iTunes 11. Apple broke (and ultimately fixed) the USB kernel extensions that are upgraded with iTunes. I examined the kexts in /System/Library/Extensions/ and AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext and AppleMobileDevice.kext look like they were updated by iTunes 12.5, so maybe Apple broke it again?

A temporary fix in iTunes 11 was to use a Time Machine backup to manually copy over the old kexts until Apple released a fix. With System Integrity Protection in El Capitan I find that I can no longer replace kexts with older ones.

Any ideas? I'm filing a bug report with Apple right now.

Tried at home with an official Apple Lightning cable, plugged the iPhone into USB and my error messages were this:

    There's a lot more usb-type errors.

On the iPhone I got the "Trust/Don't Trust screen"

    On the Mac I got:

    Linc is great.

Well, that's different. Going to try to reboot again.

Well, I can charge over USB now, and Image Capture sees the phone, but with a lock icon, and states "unlock the iPhone" but it IS unlocked.

Still no iTunes sync, or tethering.

Spotted an error message in Console like this:

9/21/16 11:38:34.713 PM com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.apple.xpc.launchd.domain.pid.BKAgentService.460) Path not allowed in target domain: type = pid, path = /Library/Frameworks/iTunesLibrary.framework/Versions/A/XPCServices/com.apple.iT unesLibraryService.xpc error = 147: The specified service did not ship in the requestor's bundle, origin = /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/BookKit.framework/Versions/A/XPCServices/com. apple.BKAgentService.xpc

Strange errors. Certainly I can't post everything since log files are so enormous, but I feel that there's something relevant about the ones I've posted so far.

    I figured it out.

Following Apple's instructions at Reset the Lockdown folder in iTunes  - Apple Support, when presented with repeated "Trust this Computer" messages upon iPhone USB connection, I deleted the lockdown folder. Unfortunately, I missed where it says to delete the contents of the folder, not the entire folder.

This explains references to this folder in the logs.

So I recreated the folder /var/db/lockdown/, but the permissions were not sufficient for iTunes. So following the directions at:

    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/28254479/xcode-error-when-running-on-device-c ould-not-allocate-a-resource

I changed the permissions on /var/db/lockdown/ to be world writable, and now, after a successful pairing, and "Trust this Computer," I can once again sync and tether!

After relaunching iTunes, that folder became populated with two files. Seems iTunes won't check for existence and create that folder automatically.

    Solved.
