Q: Identity conflict: two "My Card" entries in contacts

Hi all,

I am sure I am not the only person in the world with this issue, but the issues I have found in the forums so far (and suggested solutions) haven't really mapped to my instance.  So, I thought I'd log this for help and see how I go.

Issue Summary:

  • Although correct at icloud.com, our photos are swapped in MacBook Air > System Preferences > iCloud. My photo displays what I have set as my wife's photo in contacts. My wife's photo displays as the image she has set for my contact card in contacts.
  • macOS Sierra: "Hey Siri" on my Macbook Air and Siri responds with "Hey, MyWife'sName".
  • WatchOS: Favourites (now missing with latest OS, but previously) Favourites from my phone, displayed my photo for my wife's contact number.
  • Contacts.app on both MacBook Air's display two "My Card" contact references.
    • If I navigate to my contact card and select "My Card" then both my wife's machine and mine update to make me the contact.
    • If I then navigate to my wife's contact card on her machine and select "My Card" then we both end up with two contact cards.

Contacts: Default Address Bookfamilyname@icloud.comfamilyname@icloud.com

I suspect the issue relates to our default address book setting.  But, to be frank, that's super handy for us. We can go live life without taking two devices and contact whoever we need to etc...  I suspect that changing this will be a new kind of pain in the proverbial.

Has anyone else experienced a similar thing and, if you were able to fix it, how did you go about resolving it?

Thanks in advance!

I know it might be a stupid question to ask but, do the both of you have separate Apple ID's?

Not a stupid question, but yes.  We are both set up with individual, separate Apple ID's and configured to use the Family feature.

We do share an Apple ID on our devices for the sending/receiving of email and sharing of contacts.

Each device is configured to use our personal accounts. We have then added another email account (iCloud) for the shared ID and added another Contacts account (iCloud) for shared contacts.

On all devices Settings > Contacts > Default Account is set to the shared ID.

Our phones and iPads play perfectly with this.  Probably due to the nature of being able to set "My Info" and point it at the specific contact card in Settings > Contacts > My Info

It seems to wreak havoc on the Laptops, though.  Having signed out and back into iCloud today to get the macOS "unlock with Apple watch" functionality working, my profile picture has updated correctly.

Siri, however, still thinks I am my wife on my laptop though.

Sharing an Apple ID for Contacts may be what is causing the problem.

    Thanks Eric.

I agree.  But is there any other way to share contacts, given the "Family" functionality doesn't support it?

    It's highly discouraged by Apple.
