Q: Safari doesn't download files, it instead tries to open the url associated with the file.

As stated in the title, when I try to download a file from the internet, clicking on the link associated to the file will not start a download, but instead opens a new tab in my browser showing the url of the associated file. If I then right-click and choose 'Download linked file as...' the file can be downloaded with no issues in most of the cases, at least as long as the website allows right-click downloads to happen.

Does anybody know why this could be? I have tried resetting Safari, emptying the cache and, of course, updating my software. It is a midly annoying problem, but it doesn't happen when I use other web browsers in my iMac. Any help would be appreciated. I'm using Lion in a late 2009 iMac with, as I said, updated software.

Thanks!

iMac (21.5-inch Late 2009), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

    Sometimes that's not enough

I for one, deleted the plugins from the 'Internet Plug-ins' folder in my Library but the plug-ins still showed up when I went to 'Help > Installed Plug-ins'  in Safari.

Now, whenever you see a plugin listed inside Safari, to remove it entirely, delete the plugin file.

    • Safari > Help > Installed Plug-ins
    • Example shown below is for Flash. In my case it was 'SpeedDownload Browser Plugin.plugin'

    Shockwave Flash

    Shockwave Flash 11.9 r900 — from file “Flash Player.plugin”.

    • Copy the text under quotes i.e.: 'Flash Player.plugin'.
    • Then perform a spotlight search on the filename by going to your desktop and pressing (Cmd + Space) > Paste > Search results will automatically drop down > right click on the plugin file in the search result > Show in Finder.
    • Delete the file.
    • Restart Safari.

I did download Speed Download and decided not to use it. I used the uninstaller that comes with it but I can't get rid of this problem. Safari can't download my files. Is there a solution?

2016 and I'm having this problem, too. It started with the last update proposed for my iMac.

    Does someone have a solution?

You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is a couple of years old, less people are likely to look at it. A new post would be much more visible. You can link to this one.
