Q: MacBook Pro will not start up unless plugged in charger

Hello,

I have a 17 inch MacBook Pro, Mid 2009, Mavericks 10.9.5. Recently I started to notice that whenever I turn it on it does not go pass the apple logo and the screen goes black. Whenever I plug it into the wall charger and hit the power button again it works fine and finish the starting process with no problem. Then I can unplug it from the wall charger and continue to use it normally. I changed the battery two years ago and it was working fine until couple of months ago.

Any idea what is causing this problem and any recommendation on how to solve it is appreciated.

Did you buy the battery from Apple or is it a 3rd party product?
Did you check the battery status in the Systeminfo? How fast is the battery running down if you unplug the adapter?

the battery I got was from a third party product. Actually the battery is doing very well and I get almost 6 hours out of it when I use it. No signs or messages about its health. When I started to have this problem I went back and reinstalled my original battery ( was giving me service battery message) and the same problem presented itself too.

Have you tried a SMC reset?

If no success, run an Apple Hardware Test. It may offer a clue:

Note that an error free AHT is not conclusive.

I tried the SMC reset and that didn't help. For the AHT, I have a SSD hard drive and i could not get it to work

To run the Apple Hardware Test on a 2009 MBP, use the original installation disk that came with the MBP that has the AHT instructions written on it. Having a SSD installed has no bearing on running the AHT.

I Ran the AHT after installing it and I ran it using the quick mode test and I got this code: 4SNS/1/40000000: TB3T-128.

That sensor error code indicates a battery temperature problem. Your best option now is an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation. You are dealing with a hardware issue.
