Q: How to extend 1 partition

Hello,

I'm using a Macbook Pro with 1TB SSD storage.

On this drive I created 2 partitions. 1 with macOS Sierra and 1 with an older version.

I need this older version for some old softwares that are not compatible with the newest versions. I'm running out of storage on my macOS Sierra partition and want to use some storage of the other partition.

EG:

- Partition 1 = 500GB - 40GB free

- Partition 2 = 500GB - 300GB free

Newest version of macOS is on Macintosh HD 2 and want to extend it with space of Macintosh HD.

Can this be done? And if so... how?

this is my partition table:

/dev/disk0 (internal, physical):

   #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER

   0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *1.0 TB     disk0

   1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk0s1

   2:          Apple_CoreStorage Macintosh HD            500.2 GB   disk0s2

   3:                 Apple_Boot Recovery HD             650.0 MB   disk0s3

   4:          Apple_CoreStorage Macintosh HD 2          498.8 GB   disk0s4

   5:                 Apple_Boot Recovery HD             650.0 MB   disk0s5

/dev/disk1 (internal, virtual):

   #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER

   0:                            Macintosh HD 2         +498.5 GB   disk1

                                 Logical Volume on disk0s4

                                 C7EF8DAD-0414-43F8-969A-C59F810C0C68

                                 Unlocked Encrypted

/dev/disk2 (internal, virtual):

   #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER

   0:                            Macintosh HD           +499.8 GB   disk2

                                 Logical Volume on disk0s2

    Hello Wijcky,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I see that you would like to extend the space of a partition on your Mac. You are running out of storage on your MacOS Sierra partition and want to use some storage from the other partition. I know how important it is to make sure that you have enough space available on each partition. I'm happy to help you with this.

Please see the article Disk Utility for Mac: Partition a physical disk using Disk Utility, specifically, this section:

    Enlarge a volume

If you have multiple volumes on a device and one of them is running out of space, you may be able to enlarge it without losing any of the files on it.

To enlarge a volume, you must delete the volume that comes after it on the device, then move the end point of the volume you want to enlarge into the freed space. You can’t enlarge the last volume on a device.

WARNING: When you delete a volume, all data on it is erased. Be sure to back up your data before you begin.

    1. In the sidebar, select the device that contains the volume you want to enlarge, then click the Partition button .

    2. In the pie chart on the left, select the volume you want to remove, then click the Remove button .

    3. Click Apply.

The volume is removed, reformatted, and all free space is assigned to the previous volume.

    4. Click Done.

    All the best.
