Q: Windows unusable

Today, I installed Windows 7 on my Mac using Boot Camp. After using it for a while, I realised that I do not have enough space on its partition.

I tried to make the OS X partition smaller, but at first it didn't work. After turning off FileVault and using Disk Utility in recovery mode to use First Aid on the Macintosh HD disk and on the OS X partition (not sure if all of that was actually necessary), I was able to do it (I was planning to later use a third-party tool to enlarge the Windows partition).

But after that, I could not boot into Windows anymore. When I hold down the option key on bootup, it just shows Macintosh HD. When I go to Startup Disk in System Preferences, it shows BOOTCAMP as a folder-like icon (not sure if that is actually normal). When I restart using System Preferences with BOOTCAMP selected, it shows the message "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key" after the restart. Otherwise, the Boot Camp partition shows up perfectly fine in Disk Utility and Finder— I can even see the folders and files inside it with Finder. At first, Boot Camp Assistant showed an error message after I pressed "Continue" on the first screen, but I was able to solve this problem somehow.

I already used First Aid on the Macintosh HD disk and the OS X partition in Disk Utility, turned on FileVault again, re-enlarged the OS X partition, reset the SMC, and reset the NVRAM, but it still does not work.

Also, when I first encountered the problem, there was a weird "EFI boot" option at startup with the option key held. When I selected it, it would just shut down the computer. I somehow got this to disappear later, though.

Windows and the Boot Camp drivers worked perfectly well before I encountered this problem.

Computer details:

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012)

Processor: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Operating System:

OS X El Capitan Version 10.11.6

I would like a way to fix this problem and avoid it later when resizing my partitions. I would also prefer if I don't have to use the Terminal.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

    A. We need to disable SIP.

    1. Boot into Local Recovery (Command+R).

    2. Start Utilities -> Terminal.

    3. Type csrutil disable in Terminal and press Enter/Return.

    4. Type csrutil status.

    5. Boot normally, and type csrutil status to confirm that all individual entries are still disabled.

    B. Please ignore the i386 MBR error message, but not any others, when you run the following commands.

    sudo fdisk -e /dev/disk0

    p

    setpid 4

    07

    flag 4

    p

    w

    y

    Reboot and test.

Install OSX on an external disk using How to install OS X on an external drive connected to your Mac - Apple Support and boot from the Local Recovery of the external disk. Upgrade the external disk to match the version on the internal disk, before you use Local Recovery to boot from.

I'm actually thinking now of just uninstalling Windows and reinstalling it with larger partition space from the beginning.

But I still don't like the idea of not having a recovery mode on my computer. Will updating to macOS sierra bring recovery mode back?

Yes, and re-installing El Capitan also will bring it back.
