Q: Mac Reboots while logging in and freezes - 10.11 El Capitan

Hi, running a Mac Mini with 10.11.5 or 10.11.6 (not sure as this happened after an update).   User ran an update from the App store, computer rebooted and now when the login screen comes up we can enter the password, it then flashes back to the Apple logo for a little bit, then comes back to the login window for the password and as soon as 1 key is pressed on the keyboard the cursor freezes and the machine locks up.

Have tried to do a Safe boot, but it does not respond to that. Have tried to re-install El Capitan from CMD-R and it will download and reboot, but then when it trys to install it says that it can't use that drive.

So at a loss as to what happened or how to fix it now.

Ideas?

Macbook Black, MacMini, ATV, AEBS, iPhone 4, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

    Hi there, Tony Dehnke!

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. After reviewing your post, I understand you have a Mac mini that won't allow you to log in as expected--it gets to the login screen, but after entering the password, it returns to the Apple logo, then the login screen; from there, the computer becomes unresponsive. I rely on my own Mac every day, so I know it's important that you're able to log in. I'd be happy to help!

I see that you've tried booting into safe mode as well as reinstalling OS X through Recovery. Both of those are great steps to take! Since you're still having trouble, though, I can recommend using Disk Utility to try repairing the disk as your next step. Instructions on how to do that can be found here: Disk Utility for Mac: Repair a disk using Disk Utility

    Have a great day!
