Q: iOS 10 Mail delete all function?

I Have just installed the new ios10 update and for some reason have lost the delete/trash all function in the mail app.

The delete button is greyed out and when you select all, you can only flag a post of mark as read/unread.

Am I missing something?

iPhone 6, iOS 10

Smeetshim, the fact that your IOS mail app works makes me think we can get ours to do the same too.  Did you completely restore your Apple device to IOS 10 OR did you just do the standard in-line IOS 10 upgrade? Also what Apple device are you using? iPhone x? or an iPad?

Subfolders are the issue, not Trash.

There is a reply in this forum from someone who purports to be an Apple representative saying that this feature now only exists in the "Trash" box in iOS 10 Mail. I found it very helpful to clean out old emails that stack up in the inbox and sent boxes as well.  Obviosly Apple decided this feature was too "dangerous" for normal folk to use. I disagree and would like to see "delete all/trash all" returned in a later iteration of iOS 10. After all, you did have to got to edit before the feature could be used, so it was not just sitting there to be accidentally selected. The "Apple rep" suggested that people voice their opinions on this matter so that it might be reconsidered. I hope this is the appropriate place for that posting. Thank you for listening.

Go to your inbox, Tap Edit, then Mark All, and then Mark All as Read. This will then close the Edit mode.Tap Edit again, and tap the top message in the inbox. Press and hold the Move button with your thumb. While holding the Move button, uncheck the top message, and then release the Move button. If you have a large number of emails in the inbox, wait a couple of seconds without touching your screen.

No, this is Unhelpful. The procedure you detail is for iOS9. The 12 people who found this answer Helpful should check to see which iOS they are running. Delete All has gone and there is no work-around using flags etc.

That's just one problem. I have two email accounts: one is IMAP, the other is POP. The iOS10 Mail shoves them both into the InBox and doesn't let me view them separately.

    Sheesh.

... and then: Tap the Bin (aka Trash). The emails will miraculously drop in. Thank you!

In fact it was very helpful for iOS 10 users who wanted the delete all function. It works very well, although it is a little cludgy. This is just a workaround that actually moves the files to the trash box. Apple has said they left delete all in the trash box, but not the others. This clever workaround "deletes" the contents of the selected directory by moving them as you would using the move icon. ios 10 no longer has delte/trash all buttons active except for the Trash box. iOS 9 had it in all directories.

Sorry forgot to mention after you release the "move" button it gives you an option of where to move all the mail , you simply tap the trash box.

Tried and tested bulk e-mail delete option for ios 10, it is a work around but it does work

If you have a large number of emails in the inbox, wait a couple of seconds without touching your screen.you will be taken to the move screen. This will allow you to perform a bulk move on all of the selected emails. You can move them to any of your folders So in this case just tap the trash button.

Dr_wombat, it's actually very helpful for me personally.  I can confirm I have IOS 10, and this workaround works. However, it's clunky, like a number of changes in IOS of late.  I have no idea who at Apple is accountable for the IOS device UI, but I know if I was in charge I would have fired him/her/them for the many decisions made.  I've worked in software and hardware over the last 22 years, and according to my observations it's tantamount to ivory tower decision making.

I actually don't believe this is a conscious change by Apple. Here is why...As I've mentioned I've worked in software/hardware over the last 22 years, and certainly in the early days when there was a bug that could be classed as "by design", that's what it was called i.e. "a design feature".  The other piece of evidence that shows this is likely to be a bug is that if you try click on [edit] -> [Mark All] -> "Flag", you can flag all your messages in IOS 10. However, what if you want to undo that, like you could in IOS 9? Answer: "You can't". The option to "Unflag" no longer exists. Who in their right might would assume humans would make the correct decision or not make a mistake in flagging everything, without the option to undo that?  Finally, on this thread and others I have read on the internet, some people have IOS 10 and the "Unflag" and the "Mark All -> Delete" option DOES work.

I can only go on what I see, so unless folks are lying about their IOS 10 experiences, I'm pretty certain this is a bug.

No, it seems that Apple just removed the "delete all" function. I receive about 500 emails at my company's email. So thanks a lot, guys

    Hi All,

Spoke to the Apple team on live chat, the "Delete all" function in emails was remove by mistake in iOS10 and should be fixed soon in a update. They gave me the following "work around" (not tried it yet) Hope this helps

So what you could do is go to your inbox, Tap Edit, then Mark All, and then Mark All as Read. This will then close the Edit mode.

Tap Edit again, and tap the top message in the inbox. Press and hold the Move button with your thumb.

While holding the Move button, uncheck the top message, and then release the Move button.

You will then be on a screen with a trash icon, click it and your emails are deleted.
