Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities! If you are having issues using your Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter with your iMac, you may want to double-check the setup process outlined in the following article:
Apple USB or Thunderbolt to Ethernet Adapters: First time setup - Apple Support
If you are using an older iMac (pre-June 2012), you may also need to install an update in order for the Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter to work, as noted near the top of this article:Which computers support these Thunderbolt adapters?
All Thunderbolt-equipped Mac computers support these adapters. The adapters require OS X Lion v10.7.4 or later. To use the Apple Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter on Thunderbolt-equipped Macs released prior to June, 2012, you need to install Thunderbolt Software Update 1.2.1

Also, if your iMac was released prior to mid-2011, it will not have a Thunderbolt port; previous machines had mini-DisplayPorts, which use the same connector but do not have all the same functions as Thunderbolt.
Cheers!
