Q: Reverse iPhone mail next/previous message arrows?

When reading an email inside of the Mail app in iOS 10, the previous/next email arrows on the upper right hand corner are set up differently than most email applications (Gmail and Outlook, in specific) and it's driving my brain nuts.  The left arrow goes to the previous email received - that would seem to make sense, except that it contradicts the sorting of the email list, which shows the most recent email on top.

Is there a way to reverse the function of those arrows based on my sorting preference?  Since my newest emails are on top of my list, I'd like the left arrow to move UP the list and the right arrow to move DOWN the list.

Hello Agrahman, unfortunately it seems like you're requesting to move specific built-in features of iOS. While you can rearrange the way your mails, it's not possible to move the upper arrows because they're supposedly built-in the app and the app itself is built in iOS 10

But you can still set up your iCloud account using another mail provider, or by downloading a more convenient mail app from the App Store

    Hope that helps!

I agree - this is incredibly annoying.

On iOS9, the left arrow went to the next oldest message, and the right arrow went to the next most recent message.

On iOS10, these have been reversed.  This is the opposite of intuitive design and is different to every other mail provider app and website I have ever encountered.  It is so annoying I am wondering if it is simply a mistake.

Hi - I don't think the original poster was asking to move the arrows.  He was complaining that between iOS9 and iOS10, their functions have been completely reversed, which is bizarre.

I agree.  The change is bizarre.  In addition, on the iPad they have completely removed the previous/next controls.  You need to either continually go back to the mailbox level (portrait) or stay in landscape mode.  Neither is a good way to use the app.  Guess it is time to switch to another mail app on the devices.

This is really annoying.  It must be a bug. Please fix in IOS10.next. Thanks.

Exactly, the arrows have swapped functions when compared to iOS 9. I'm about to downgrade back to it because 10 is getting a little ridiculous.

Besides switching the meaning, even more annoying is they changed from  " ^ V " to " < >" for the arrows. The original was more intuitive to me since the list of the e-mails scrolls up/down not right/left.

This is idiotic behaviour. I flagged this early on in the beta and was ignored.

LIke everyone else, my emails are displayed vertically and not horizontally so the arrows should be up/down and not left/right anyway.

i do do hope it gets fixed soon.
