One reason could possibly be an extension conflict. Does this happen when you see icons loading in the lower section of the display? Any difference if you press and hold down the Shift key during startup? Knowing the exact iMac model and the operating system version would help. Since this has been posted under Classic Mac OS (OS9, OS8 & System 7), I assume that the machine is running Mac OS 8.x or 9.x.

Does this mean stop loading (freeze), or does the computer really turn off (power off)? Any error tones or messages?

Thanks for your help.  It is an osx10.11.3

It would literally turn off half way through loading after I entered my password

I followed someones directions last night to erase my macintosh HD utility disc.  It now starts with an apple on the screen then loads half way to start then turns into a blank screen with a circle and line through it.  I thought I would try my install disc and now its stuck inside.  My mac keyboard stopped working after the cat walked over it so am using a windows ibm keyboard.

It all started one morning I woke up and had not turned my pc off the night before.  When I woke up the screen was blank with the circle with line through it then I had the problem since ever trying to use it again.  It would start up...ask for my password then start to load and turn off.  I followed someone elses instructions last night to start in recovery and ended up deleting mac hd utlity disc and now this happens.

    Hi,

    >It is an osx10.11.3

Yes, a Mac OS 8.x or 9.x (not to be confused with OS X) extension conflict, as indicated in my first reply, did not appear to be quite consistent with an initial password.

Unless someone else here has a comment or solution, I suggest that you post a new question in one of the areas iMac or OS X El Capitan.
