Q: has my MacBook Air been hacked?

suddenly getting a little "i" (not secure) instead of lock symbol in front of URLs -- does this mean I've been hacked?

The "i" shows site information. Click on it.

    Have a nice day.

Actually, it was by clicking on the "i" that I discovered the sites were not secure!

When they are secure there is no "i"!

When I click on the "i", I see a message: your connection to this site is not private

There is a clickable "details" which, when I click on it, gives a list of www sites -- four or five of them, most with strange combinations of letters that don't mean anything.

Unfortunately, I didn't write anything down and right now when I tried to duplicate what happened day before yesterday, what comes up on details is message saying details available when reload, which when I do that gives me the url of the site I'm on, that site's support link and google-analytics.com

Just now I tried one that was insecure yesterday and it is again today and details gave me:

Non-secure origins is the url of site i went to http://wfto.com

and under that it says Secure Origins and lists two with green dots in front of them:

    https://pbs.twimg.com and https://cdn.syndication.twing.com

This is more reassuring than earlier when I posted the question about being hacked -- then I was getting a lot of "alphabet soup".

BUT I'm still getting sites that say they are not private when that's never happened before.

Thanks for an advice you can give me....

It's not a hack but it appears you are using twing.

consider using malwarebtyes to check for Malware/Adware on your mac and if it detects a variant it will delete it

    https://www.malwarebytes.com/

MWB does not protect you against this stuff, it just removes it if it finds it. It's free BTW and I don't get paid for recommending it but many of us use it.

THANK YOU! Thank you! Thank you!

I was thinking recent system update did something new and unsettling... don't know why it did not come to mind right away that about a month ago I "signed up" for a free VPN so I could watch BBC videos. doh

Got a little box in the upper right corner soon after I got your message.... said my connection was not private and indicated the symbol for the VPN was not secure.

Deleted it from applications. Disabled it in extensions.

Still getting the little "i" at the beginning of url's when I click on a link -- but then it changes to a lock.

I feel so much better!  Love that you helped me and also gave me link for malware check, when it is so clear that I am tech-challenged.  Thank you for walking me thru!
