Q: Change password

How do I change my password to this site? I looked all over, my profile, preferences, spent a lot of time looking, and there is nowhere to change my password.

Please be aware that I am referring to discussions.apple.com, NOT idmsa, iCloud, daw.apple.com, developer, appleid.apple.com or any other Apple subdomains. I am registered as Gnarlodious on this support website and want to change the password for that username.

Yes, I actually despise Safari and only use it when forced to.

I think I must be one of some ‘legacy’ users who signed up back when all Apple had was Discussions. Then when they invented AppleID, all new registrants were directed through that system. ‘Discussions’ usernames were relegated to never be connected to AppleID. The only way I could join my two accounts would be to forfeit my Discussions reputation and never use my current username.

It really gripes me that Apple is so backward.

    OK

    I just

    1. chose the link I posted above
    2. chose N. America big button
    3. chose "Get help now" link
    4. Resulted in "What’s happening with your Apple ID?" titled page (iPhone for you here?)
    5. chose "Other Apple ID topics"
    6. chose "Topic not listed"
    7. entered "Blah" (literally)
    8. [Continue] button
    9. presented with 3 options for telephone contact

    All took about 20 seconds

I sign-in with the one set of credentials and can have simultaneous access to discussions.apple.com, developer.apple.com, bugreport apple.com, reportaproblem.apple.com, and probably more if I looked hard enough.

I wonder if this is similar to the old AOL screenname issue. At one point Apple IDs could be based around an AOL screenname rather than an email address. Typically you would sign in with an email address and a password, the email address being different from the username attached to your posts.

Whatever the cause this seems like something that will need some behind the curtain activity from our hosts. I will ask them to reach out to you.

see my other comment where I talk about recent changes causing me to be "recognized" no matter where I go in all of AppleWideWorld = EXCLUDES the 3 ASCs I belong to - I can be simultaneously logged into:

    * notice that the first two are BOTH in a single subdomain "communities" - BUT - are in a subDIRECTORY for each language
One login does NOT make one logged into BOTH - requires separate login actions

Persist in your efforts to Contact Apple for help with Apple ID account security

LIE about your problems in the triage portion if necessary and sort it out once you have made a phone contact

Yes! It could be the case that back in prehistory I started my account from an AOL screenname!

At some point, as I recall, when they invented the modern AppleID system, I used my current email address. Later, when I attempted to update my Discussions account, it said my email address was already in use. This might have been about 2006 or 7.  I was then forced to enter a dummy email address just to update other information, because I did not have 2 email addresses.

That would be the best explanation yet.

    ASC runs on JiveSoftware

Jive databases are two-fold = Content (messages) & UserID data (prefs, authored/participated/following 'content', followed places & people)

They seem to have a mind of their own at times (sometimes OFTEN)

Forum is full of "glitches" (to put it politely)

I have had an "email notifications" problem for (call it) a year that seems to elude solution by the AppleJiveTeam

Hosts contact seems to be in the offing thanks to tt2 -

It suddenly occurs to me that the password I use to log in is the same as the Yahoo password that was recently alleged to be compromised, which is why I wanted to change it. Meaning it is from the same vintage as the AOL account that I must have used to post here about 14 years ago. I don’t know if Apple is still connected to AOL but the simple 6 character password would not be allowed under current Apple security. If that is true, then it is a security hole that I can’t plug, because there is no way to change my very weak password. It means any hacker could break into this account, but would not be able to change the password.

    Argh!

    OK

Tell us precisely the steps that you take to change your password - excruciating detail - with results along the way... ultimately ending with the Big Fail

simply "not able to" or "not working" tells us WAY too little to paint a mental picture

There aren’t any such steps because there is nowhere to change my password. There is a ‘Privacy’ setting that only relates to email notifications, and there is ‘Preferences’ which relates to website appearance.

    OK

Again - INSIDE ASC is NOT where you manage your password. That is done at the MAIN Apple ID console

Change your Apple ID password - Apple Support

Change your Apple ID - Apple Support < email address, other stuff

Yep, the place to change your password should be https://appleid.apple.com/ - update the AppleID and discussions will use the new password next time you log in. Although I can see that isn't going to work if your ASC credentials are <username>+<password> instead of <email address>+<password>.

Negative. My Discussions username Gnarlodious is not connected to my Apple ID. Strange but true. From a browser logged into Apple ID, if I try to load the Discussions subdomain it says I am unknown.

I have gone around in circles for years about this problem. I last tried in 2012 to solve it and the geniuses at Apple told me it was impossible. Maybe in another 4 years if I am still using Apple products I will try again to see if they have fixed it.

Hopefully one of the hosts will make contact as requested. Perhaps they can tweak your ASC account so that is linked to your Apple ID, and needs that set of credentials to sign into it.

Yes they did contact me and were kind enough to inform me that I have a “Legacy ID” which is forever trapped in limbo.
