Sep 23, 2016 11:31 AM in response to Allen Aby rotorblades,Allen, thanks for the suggestion, however, the USB drive is still not recognized on boot. I continue to have to remove it, then reinsert it for it to be recognized.

If the SMC reset didn't solve the issue it may help to reinstall the MacOS Sierra update using recovery mode. It would be a good idea to back up your Mac before any other steps. This article will guide you through that process:
Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac
Next, reinstall OS X using the "If you're reinstalling for other reasons" section of this document:
Reinstalling will not delete any of you data, it only installs a fresh copy of the operating system. If you run into any trouble. We're all here to help.
