Q: No 5 Star Song Rating in iOS 10

What is going on? Did Apple really remove the 5 Star Song Rating from the Music App in iOS 10. I can only find Like and Dislike. Well I have been using iTunes since it was SoundJam, and have been rating my songs using the 5 Stars, and making various Playlists based on those. And I have always used Music on iOS to rate songs, but not having that really drives me insane. It seems to be Apple thinking they are smarter than everyone once again, but not being right! I am not going to go through my 40,000+ music Library and rerate my mysic so simply! I might as well move to Windows and Android and re-rate there! Seriously this is taking my main featute out of the music player! You have to be kidding me!

Figured out how to edit the original reply, so this post is now irrelevant.  Can't figure out how to delete it though.

What I think is happening is that there are now hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people who have never synced their iDevices with a computer.

For them the star rating system is meaningless, because Apple (in their wisdom) doesn't allow users to create smart-playlists on their iOS devices.  And the star rating system is really only useful if you can create smart playlists.  Because everyone who uses the star system has a slightly different take on what the stars mean for them, (I never listen to songs rated 3 stars, but some people would) Apple can't really use stars to decide what not to play.  So a black and white system works better for them.

For those users who don't use smart playlists the like/dislike system works fine.  They hear what they like more often (presumably) and don't hear what they don't like.

The obvious solution is to allow users to create smart playlists on their iDevices.  But I guess because some people will find that confusing Apple has never added the feature.

Guess the Explanation is right that from Apples view it had to go.

In my opinion this is awful.

Well that's part of the problem: where is Apple's statement on removing a feature that its users have come to depend on (and invested lots of time in) in the 10+ years since it was introduced?  Was it in the iOS10 release notes?

A statement would be useful so we can understand where this is going? Is it a bug and we can expect it to be back or will Apple go even further and eradicate the feature from the underlying meta model and iTunes? (in which case the 3rd party workarounds mentioned here are all doomed).

Same here. I've submitted my apple feedback and recommend everyone who misses this feature to do the same. Fingers crossed that this comes back, or else... I'm going to have to think about leaving itunes/iphone for good. Oh boy...

yes, please everyone submit feedback for this issue... I think I've been using the rating system for more than 10 years at this point, or as far back as I can remember, really hope they bring it back even if it's just a hidden feature.

My guess? This is step one in killing off Smart Playlists altogether. iTunes is such a mass of patches and hacks that Apple wants to do what it can to simplify it without removing the core functionality (sucking money from your pocket - what, you thought it was there to help you manage your music library?)

I've submitted feedback, and the next time that helps when Apple makes a silly UI change will be the first.

I have heard a number of rumors over the years, of things in the beta stream that got taken out, or not in the beta stream that got put in for the GM, I would not count on the beta to be a foreshadow of what they will do in the next release.

They might just quietly put it back in for a future release, or they might bite down harder like a dog on a bone and start removing other things too... Look at the issue with the cover flow feature. I thought it was great, but ultimately learned to live without it. The smart playlists however are an integral part of my listening experience, that if they are **** bent on removing that, I will no longer have a desire to stay with apple. Their MUSIC PLAYER IS THE ONLY REASON I HAVE A MAC AND MAC PRODUCTS.

I've seen the 3 big giants of software (Apple, Google and Microsoft) dumb down and make every aspect of their software so ******** and so hard to use that I think they are going this route just because that's the new trend... as if some clown out there sold a book saying "the new generation is too stupid to figure out how to push buttons, so you need to take away all the buttons and put an accelerometer and microphone on the device so when they shake it and yell at it in frustration, it turns itself on and eventually figures out what they want.

For their music app, first google first took away the thumbs down (last time I checked, they ONLY had a thumb's up), then they took away the "recommended" section, instead forcing you to rely on a curated playlist by some clown 3000 miles away who appeals to the majority, not to you.

I get that apple wants to keep the interface simple and easy to use, but that thinking is about as dangerous as saying "nope, that 'check engine' light is not clear and dire enough.... let's just kill the engine and change the working to 'call your mechanic'....".

I would not base their future decisions on what they do right now with their beta program. Maybe the only solution is to have enough people yelling at them loudly and long enough that they will realize "don't mess with that feature".

I also just realized that they screwed up the shuffle again. I can see the upcoming tracks and if I don't want a song to play I will remove it. However now if I remove it after the current song finishes playing and advances it will put the song I remove back into the list. Why must they fix something that isn't broke?

Anyway I found a nice widget called "Music Rating" that seems to work pretty good and only costs 0.99. The developer has even made a couple updates since this wonderful "Improvement" to the iOS 10 music app.

Just a reminder to people who miss this feature to submit feedback to apple and just maybe we might get it back.

It's almost like Apple WANTS to push more people to Spotify!

    C'mon, Apple, fix this ASAP!

We all know iTunes is bloated and crash-prone.  But we use it to sync our music to our iPhones/iPods. Now that this iOS update has ruined the Music app on the iPhone, does anyone know of a better Mac OS and iOS solution?  Can't believe Apple made such a stupid move.

I am absolutely with you. I am so annoyed by Apple for letting people use a feature for years and years, setting up a music library, with a lot of time and energy and then: taking it away. How about stripping MP3 file sync altogether? This was the first time I looked up another mobile phone maker than Apple. I am beyond angry.

I have also contacted Apple about this, but for me - as an Apple fanboy - I am so disappointed at Apple these days. I will still buy the things because I do not trust the competitor, but Apple keeps failing its core audience and that is like watching a snail crashing into a wall. It's slow and it still happens.

I have the same problem as you guys and just posted this at Apple Feedback:

iOS 10 dropped the Stars rating I used for years to rank my Music tracks.

I want to see this back asap on the app!

This was a very negative Apple surprise for me:

    - First of all I love music more than technology

    - Been an audio equipment & music reviewer for many years

    - Senior global high-tech corporate IT exec, know how challenging to launch and version products

    - All-Apple client: Macs, iPads/pods/phones, Aiport, etc

    - TB of stored music, a good part star-ranked over years

    - 128GB iPhone 6 has 100+GB of music & a full 64GB-4S

    - Digitizing/ripping my 5000+ albums in hi-res but keeping collection

    - Every time I listen to a track I mentally reflect and rank it in stars to prioritize storage two ways between Mac and iPhones, and also to make smarter playlists

    - Human tastes do change over time but not binaryly as the hearts Y/N

Thank you, appreciate your comment. But - come on - this is like telling a Mercedes driver to try to us the feedback function on their website after his steering wheel got removed by Mercedes. It seems surreal to me - all this around the missing star ratings. Would Spotify offer star ratings (no clue why they dont) I would leave apple Music immediately to protest.
