Q: your apple id has been blocked from signing in for 24 hours try signing in again later

My wife changed her passphrase and seems unable to remember it, her work email account forces very frequent changes which doesn't help.

I have used ITunes recovery to reset her phone luckily she has a very resent backup however I am unable to get any device to restore from backups as I get the following message "your apple id has been blocked from signing in for 24 hours try signing in again later".

•I have reset her Appleid password as it forced me to when I logged in.
•added my phone number as a secondary for two factor auth for convenience.
•contact Apple support who was eluding to waiting 24 Hours which is a real pain and not entirely convinced that is what she was saying as I was struggling with her accent some what.
•The error implies this was just a trust thing with this particular device however I get the same result on my old 5S.

At least she is currently able to use it to a very basic degree as a new phone obviously apps and lack of contacts are a pain, I doubt Imessage works either.

Just wondering if anyone else has had any experience or can offer any guidance I can log into the account just not restore from it, A google search returns varying error messages none identical not sure if it is new Post IOS 10.

Appreciate any feedback.

2FA has a number of security triggers in it that are not well documented. So detailed answers for this will be hard to come by.

You must be wanting to restore from an iCloud backup. Keep in mind, any content she "creates" on her phone from now until you restore will be overwritten by the restore process. And since she can't sign in to iCloud, there is no syncing going on.

I am confused though by you saying... " I can log into the account just not restore from it"

What are you able to log in to?

If you lose control of your 2FA protected Apple ID, which does not sound like the case here, you will have to go through Apple's Account Recovery process >>> Regain access to your Apple ID with two-factor authentication account recovery - Apple Support

    Hi,

For clarification, I can login to the account itself on icloud.com via a web browser with getting the second factor of auth sent me my iPhone via sms so the account is defiantly working ok, this message appears when you try to restore put the Apple ID and password then the second factor of authentication (delivered via SMS) it goes through the motions then comes up with the message.

Thanks for pointing out that changes between now and actual restore not being persistent, I had factored that in but appreciate the prompt.

unfortunately I think you are right in that it is very poorly documented, Apple support were little help other than advising that it might be best to just wait 24 hours.

I do think Apple have slightly dropped the ball on this one, putting so much enthuses on using the IPhone to do so much, then locking it out and giving little to no useful information other than tough luck wait your 24 hours.

I do appreciate the balance between security and functionality can be difficult at times but as I can pass both factors of auth there really is no valid reason why they shouldn't be able to fast track the process.

    Thanks for your response.

    J.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem or a suggestion for change. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem/suggested change solved sooner.

I can empathize with your situation.

However, don't you agree that any fast track or shortcut or workaround could weaken the system?

If I am the bad guy trying to hack your account, I won't wait 24 hours to try again... I'll move on to a weaker account to attack.

It's a cliche, but a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.

Ordinarily I would agree with you, however I'm not convinced restoring from backup is going to give you access to an awful lot more information than Icloud itself bear in mind you can still access it via  a browser (assuming you can pass auth).

Even if they excluded the keychain from the restore for security it would be better compromise.

Anyway just simply arguing schematics here not really moving further forward, really appreciate the responses.
