Q: macOS Sierra has a serious issue that needs to be addressed soon

Hi,

A couple of days back I installed macOS Sierra on my MacBook Air (bought in 2012). Ever since I installed the new OS, my MacBook doesn't shut down gracefully as it used to with all earlier versions. Soon after I choose shutdown, its screen becomes grey in a few seconds, however it doesn't shutdown completely for another 10 to 15 minutes, which is really annoying and could cause damage to the system. I searched on the internet and found a couple of users who have the exact same problem after installing the new OS. Per some of the suggestions, I disabled FileVault and also reset the keychain. Nothing has helped so far.

just to let you know that I experienced this issue when I installed the beta version a month ago. I reported it to the service agent through online chat, but at that time I was told that the support couldn't do much, since the software wasn't released officially. The gentleman told me that he would share my concern / feedback with the development team so that they could take corrective action. Not sure what happened after that. I still have the same issue with the final release.

I hope this will be fixed, tested, and released soon.

Thanks!

Shut down your Mac and restart it in "Safe Mode". To learn how to do that please read: Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up.

It will take longer to start in Safe Mode so allow it to do that. Then, log in as usual.

Then, choose Shut Down... from the  (Apple) menu.

    Any change?

SSince this isn't an issue on any of the 5 computers I have using Sierra I'm fairly certain the problem lies within your computer. John Galt offered up my first suggestion. The second, if that doesn't completely fix it is to download and install EtreCheck and post the results here. This will give us an idea of what's going on and what might be causing the stall.

Thanks for the reply John. In safe mode it always shuts down gracefully as it used to earlier. I tried a couple of times and each time I didn't see any issue in shutdown. However, when I start it in regular mode, it again goes in very long shutdown cycle as I mentioned in the original post. Any further suggestions or recommendations?

    Thanks,

The fact that it shuts down normally in Safe mode is an indication that you have some 3rd party addition that is causing it.  Let's see the Etrecheck report.

    Problem: Other problem

    Description:

Takes too long to shut down in normal mode. Upon shut down the screen becomes grey and then then after 10 to 15 minutes it shuts down completely. This has been happening even since I installed macOS Sierra. I faced the same issue in Sierra Beta version, but then I rolled back to OS X El Capitan which (or any of the earlier versions) never had any issues. Recently I reinstalled final release of Sierra and again facing the same issue.

NOTE: This issue doesn’t occur in safe mode.

I saw three things: the Seagate, Linksys, and NTSF items which may require updates for Sierra to behave. Also I see that you use VirtualBox. has it been updated for Sierra? Also, I noted that it is auto launched. Is it running a guest OS when you shut down? This might explain it. When in safe mode these extensions (and the guest OS) wouldn't have loaded thus the faster shutdown.

I (like dwb) suspect VirtualBox, can you try manually shutting it down prior to exiting OS X and check that the items mentioned by dwb are up to date.

MySQL has been reported to cause this to occur: Re: Can't shutdown MacBook Pro after upgrading to macOS Sierra

You're already running the latest version of VirtualBox.

This could be the reason. MySQL was setup with auto start, i just now stopped it and it's taking long to shutdown. Still in progress. Will keep you posted.

So sorry for late response. Yes I followed what you pointed out. Removed Virtual box since I am no longer using it. Also updated seagate dashboard version. The main culprit is MySQL. I have stopped it and have also turned off auto run on startup. Now there are no issues with shut down process.

I too had the same issue for which you helped provide the solution.

However my experience was that when I updated the application Smart Switch after installing Sierra, I had the long delay in shutdown as described by many others (mine is a mid 2010 21.5 inch iMac).

I have deleted Smart Switch from my applications and the problem has gone.

My knowledge is not as extensive as the others preceding me in this post, and do not know whether MySQL is also the culprit for me, nor how to stop it or turn off auto run on startup.

I would like to re-install Smart Switch at some point in the future, and will need to update other applications as needed.

Will this be a recurring issue with other application updates, and not just for Smart Switch?

Is this an issue for Apple to resolve in a future update to Sierra or is it incumbent on me to do as Osmand (odas123) has done?
