Q: Siri not working on Sierra

I upgraded to Sierra and Siri doesn't work.  I hear the beep that Siri has been activated but when I talk there is no waveform movement in the Siri window or in other words it's not hearing me.  When I go in the System Preferences I see the microphone is hearing me when I talk with the bar meter moving as I speak.  I even tried my Bluetooth headset mic as an alternative source and SIri will still not recognize my voice.  Any ideas?

I had the same question, first you need to click on the microphone in the Siri dialog box which should activate your mic. This didn't work for me immediately so I disabled Siri then enabled again and now it's working, good luck.

Well I tried your idea and still not go.  I just don't get how the iMac mic works in the sound control panel but not for Siri.  Is there some Siri preference I need to trash to get rebuilt or something like that?  Thanks.

OK I figured it out.  The iMac mic was being used by the dictation control panel.  BTW the Dictation control panel in Sierra is now a tab under the Keyboard control panel - go figure.  I turned off dictation and Siri worked.  Then I turned the dictation back on and Siri sitil works.  Guess the two just had to figure out how to get along with each other.  Voice recognition sibling rivalry I guess...

    I have the same issue.

Unfortunately your solution does not work for me.

I disabled dictation and Siri. After turning Siri on, it still "ignored" my questions.

After disabling them go into the Siri control panel and double check that the computer mic is selected.  I had to reselect it.

Thanks for your reply. The internal mic is selected, still Siri isn't able to hear me. I have read in different threads, that it might work with an external microphone. Strange bug.

I hope Apple fixes this with an update.

Just double checking.  Reselect the internal mic in the siri control panel not just in the sound control panel.

Found a solution in my case. I am using an external USB soundcard to protect my audio jack. It does not matter which setting I select, as long as the sound card is connected. After unplugging it, Siri works perfectly fine.

Thank you for your suggestions and good luck with the issue.

I'm having the same issue. I'm using a 2015 MacBook Pro, connected to an OWC Thunderbolt 2 Dock. Connected to the dock are two monitors and a pair of external speakers.

When I'm not connected to the dock, Siri works fine. When I connect to the dock, Siri doesn't hear me anymore. I've checked the sound and Siri settings, and they're both set to the internal microphone.

I tried your solution above, but I got the same result as davidfromingleside.

Interesting...the internal microphone hears me for all other "apps" (FaceTime, Voice Recording, etc)...but not with Siri. David, is that happening with you, also?

Since this is a thread that has been solved then apply the same solution if you have the same problem.

My bad...I quoted the wrong user above. I'm still having the same issue similar to ifisch5 above. My issue isn't with a sound card, though. For me it's when I'm connected to my thunderbolt dock.

If that is so then you really should start your own thread with all of the pertinent data for your problem posted there.

Thank you for continuing to post as your troubleshooting progressed. Disabling dictation under the Keyboard settings pane and then disabling and re-enabling Siri along with dictation managed to solve the issue on my end.
