Q: Time Machine not working after Sierra update

The time machine function of my Mackbook Air 2011 stopped working...it has not backed up since updating to Sierra, all it does is take hourly screen shots, it will no longer back up to my external hard drive like it used to.

There is no problem with how it is set up or the hard drive it's self as my iMac is working perfectly fine since updating to Sierra and it is backing up via time machine to the same hard drive.

This is a hard drive and set up i have had in use for about 5 years with no problems.

Also since updating to Sierra i noticed my MacBook Air gets hot and the fans run wild even though there was nothing one or running other than the system it's self.

I lost use of my built in camera after updating to El Capitan and now i have lost the use of time machine...wondering if i should go back to Yosemite as everything worked fine then!..is this possible?

Thanks for any help with all this!

I am just downloading Sierra again from the App Store...it is downloading to my Launchpad area where all other software/apps are stored...is this correct, is this what it should be doing and where it should be downloading to?

did you even restart in Safe Mode? If not, do so. Also make sure you have the most recent version of your Safari extensions. Finally, take a look at the CPU tab of Activity Monitor to see what your most active processes are. You still have something going on with Safari but it isn't possible to tell just from what's being posted in the EtreCheck listing. If updating extensions and the Safe Mode restart don't improve things we can take a look at something else.

    Ok, update on everything done...

Sophos and Rapport uninstalled...downloaded and reinstalled Sierra, backed up via time machine.

Only had one safari extension (add block plus), it was up to date but uninstalled it.

Restarted, restarted in safe-mode, restarted again.

Once all loaded checked CPU with just system running...there was an initial spike, sat and watched while it settled, watched for a few minutes, CPU stayed at over 97% idle...top processes were 'kernel_task, Go for Gmail. WindowServer, Activity Monitor'.

Launched Safari and sat with my FB page open, again, initial spike but once settled CPU stayed above 97% idle, same processes active as above.

Went to FB news feed in safari, initial spike but again after settling CPU stayed at over 97% idle, same active processes as above with the addition of the Facebook url.

After all this i ran EtreCheck again...

It doesn't appear that you uninstalled Rapport correctly because there are still bits and pieces of that are crashing on your Mac.

In addition, there appear to be problems with Safari and Photos are indicated by the crashes.

It might be time for you to reinstall Sierra to see if that will fix the problems that Sophos and Rapport have created with your operating system.

I did do a proper uninstall of Rapport so don't know why there are still bits of it left on...also, if you read again you will see i have already reinstalled Sierra!...did it earlier today!

What is causing safari and photos to be an issue and how can i get rid of the left over bits of rapport?

Ok, used spotlight to search out other rapport bits left behind and i found the following...

    Under developer...

com.trusteer.rapport.rapportd.plist ...looked like a text file can post the info on it if needed.

rapportd...unix executable, a black box with the word exec in it.

I doubt that it is anything Apple can "sort out" as you say. it is more likely a problem with your Mac that you must sort out instead.

Instead of threadjacking and adding not a thing, if you have a problem start a new thread. TimeMachine isn't broken in Sierra. Some people might experience problems but it is a problem localized to their computer.

I don't think roryfromwallingford was threadjacking, probably like me wondering why there's been no response to this for a good few days...so just to update from my end, all sophos and rapport files were removed properly (including those odd left over files I found) add block plus was also removed, the comp has been restarted in safe mode...it was mentioned earlier that if removing these things did not improve all the problems then there were other things that could be looked into but, all correspondence stopped for some reason!...you now seem to be saying it's my comp that's the problem!

Anyway, to update, time machine seems to be running ok now, still no camera since Yosemite update and for some reason my wifi disconnects every time the comp goes to sleep or the the safari browser is minimised, it never did that before.

oh!...well that's ok, but if that's the case maybe someone could have just said that instead of leaving it dead!

Well thank you everyone for all your help, much appreciated as I did get some of the issues sorted If not all.
