In case anyone is interested, the ability to change the password for an E-Mail account in Settings, and its location to do so, is tied directly to the type of account / provider it is and comes from.

It really has very little to do with iOS or the iPhone.

for instance, Gmail will not allow you to change the password, so you have to delete, and recreate the account.

Other providers such as Hotmail, will allow you to do this, but may be in a different location than regular POP or IMAP providers.

I have 8 different E-mail accounts setup on my iPhone, and the only one that does not let you change the password is Gmail. This is just down to how Google works.

Every other provider I have has a place to edit the password for the account.

Also, for what its worth, I do have an android phone also, and guess what, you cannot change the Password to a Gmail account either. You need to remove the account entirely to change it.

Thanks, Phil. I knew I'd occasionally gotten it to work but generally found it faster to delete and re-add. The clarification is quite helpful.

What is it that you want, how to change passwords on a phone you don't use?

What a waste of time. You must have little of importance to do

    Goodbye

I already have one.  There are many things about the iPhone that are counter-intuitive.  Not as bad as a Droid. I've owned both. The iPhone is not perfect. And when you try to perform a simple task like change an email password but have to delete the account and re-add it, it is frustrating.  So guess what. I have an opinion.  Go bother someone else.

I'be never had to delete an account to change a password. But that's because I know where the settings are for each type of account (POP, IMAP, Exchange, iCloud, gmail, AOL, Yahoo, etc). Each account type has different requirements and has the password(s) in different steps, the same as for Windows, Mac and linux. Some have the password in separate locations for incoming and outgoing (and they can be different). Other types have only one password. So while you CAN change passwords without deleting the account, deleting is easier ,and easier to explain.

Thanks for that Phil 0214. I have found adding a new account to my (new) iPhone from the popular options (iCloud,Exchange, Google, Yahoo, etc) is simple and fast (about 60 seconds) But I did lose the best part of 3 hours over some days using the "OTHER" section to get the settings all working manually on my own (hosted by 1and1) account. The iPhone setting instructions on that site had not been fully updated so I eventually called their customer services who were excellent. SNAFU rules.
