Q: macOS Sierra - No Sound

I just updated to macOS Sierra. Now I have no sound what-so-ever.

Checked all the usual things (speakers, volume, settings, etc.).

Is there a macOS 10.12 sound driver or anything that I can reinstall?

Mac mini, iOS 10, null

Apple deletes the installer after installing. Good thing you had a copy on your clone.

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.

You can use the Guest User or create a new User for testing.

    CREATE A NEW USER

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Users & Groups.

Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching.

Only default Apple apps will  be in the Dock in the new User. Go to Applications to open other apps you might want to test.

You can skip signing in with your Apple ID unless you want to test any iCloud features.

Do you still see the issue?

If yes, then the problem is global.

If no, then the problem is in your User's folder.

I'll check, but I was at the Apple Store today and the Mac mini on display didn't have sound either (the mic input also didn't work)...

I have Mac Mini mid 2010 (officially supported) and have same issue. MacBook Pro 2014 has no sound issues. Probably some driver problem. Startup jingle sounds! But after booting into Sierra, no sound output (including internal speaker) works.

Sound working again!!!!! Opened MIDI setup from Utilities folder. I set audio sampling rate to 44.1 kHz and 16 bits per sample (CD quality standard) ...and Voilà....sound is working again!!!! After that I tried any other rate/bps setting and it works with no glitches!!!!

After setting all posible sound outputs to 44.1 kHz/16 bps everything is working OK. Sound is on even after shutting computer down and turning on again.

Have you tried to set ALL outputs to same values? My Mini (as said before) failed after restart. I had to set HDMI to same values as internal speaker and external speakers connected to "headphone out" connector. Funny thing is that I have an LED panel connected to HDMI only. Panel has no built-in speakers but HDMI appears in audio devices list hence the HDMI connector is plugged in. I`ve got feeling that sound card driver has problems while different settings for analog and digital outputs exist.

Yep.. same problem in my 2010 Mac mini.

After update sound not work -> reinstalled -> works ok.

But.. today I try to watch Netflix and no sound again

Only HDMI seems to work for now.

Facebook video no longer works in Chrome, which Facebook video calls require because they don't work in Safari. Luckily, I only installed Sierra on my GF's MacBook and not mine, so I can verify that under normal circumstances sound works.

Hope Apple fixes this issue soon, what a pain!

The "setting ALL outputs to the same values" bit seems to be the key here. If I do that I get the sound back on my Mac Mini.

Once the machine reboots I have to re-do this, though.

Here's hoping it's resolved in the next update.

Thank you for the temporary workaround. Really appreciated.
