Q: Safari 10.0 can't connect to most servers

Using El Capitan 10.11.6 on a MacBook Pro 2011 that's been running fine until… I did the Safari 10 update today (along with iTunes and Camera RAW updates—iTunes is fine and I don't use RAW images). Now Safari won't load most websites. For example: Google and discussions.apple.com work, but apple.com and ask.com do not work. "Safari can't connect to the server". Not using VPN or OpenDNS, no changes to Network prefs.

Have tried:

Restarted Safari

Logged into Admin acct. (Safari works fine there; all pages load, so this problem is specific to my normal user acct.)

Cleared caches via the Developer menu

Deleted cookies

Restarted Mac

Turned WiFi off and reset modem and router

Added new Network Location & deleted old (per Apple forum suggestion)

Turned off all Safari extensions (Pinboard, LastPass, JSblocker)

Ran Malwarebytes using current data files (nothing found)

Anyone have further suggestions?

Safari - Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

Safari doesn't load a page or webpage items are missing

Safari/other browsers – Website not loading

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Thanks; I'm working through your instructions.

    • Before you replied I ran all the maintenance and cleanup tasks via the OnyX app for El Capitan. No effect.
    • Completed all steps in your 2nd link, "Safari doesn't load a page…", including deleting all browser history and data. No effect.
    • The 1st and 3rd links won't load (Safari can't connect to the server), but I'll follow them later today via my iPhone.

In the meantime, can you clarify what you posted in your description of Safe Mode: "Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer." If Mac OS has a built-in uninstaller I've never found it. My method is to do a finder search for an app name, including system and hidden files, and then trash any results that make sense. I've tried a few third-party uninstaller apps and they eventually tried to delete unrelated files, so I stopped trusting them years ago. But if you have a better method I need details before I start killing off third party software (assuming I have to go there to fix this), if you wouldn't mind educating me further:)

If it worked in the Safe Mode, please post the Etrecheck report.

Some applications come with an uninstaller and for some you need to find the developer's uninstall instructions.

Done with all your recommendations except uninstalling third party apps. I'll read my Etrecheck report and check back here first. Maybe save me some guessing… Safe Mode did resolve the problem, but only in Safe Mode; when I restarted in normal mode the problem reappeared. Here's the report:

I finally tracked the issue of Safari and other browsers not loaded web pages at all or only certain pages. It turns out that for some unknown reason Web Proxy and Secure Web Proxy were both checked causing it to just sit. The weird thing now is that although I changed the setting it will revert back to being selected if I turn off my Wi-FI or reboot. Once I figure that out then life will be back to normal. Maybe I will make a new location and see if that sticks.

Thanks, Eric. I can't uninstall Carbonite; it's required for my business contract, but your answer* does two things:

    1. Etrecheck is now my favorite system utility, because the culprit (Little Snitch) was in the same launch daemons list as Carbonite, and though it wasn't running as hot as Carbonite—it's active very frequently in Activity Monitor. I must have authorized a Snitch rule when the new version of Safari fired up or something, that prevented outgoing connections on those websites. Gotta be careful with Snitch; it likes to popup its rule suggestions with the OK button selected. Deleting a Snitch rule solved the issue*. Twas a defective user, as usual.

    2. Trying to follow your suggestion to find a way to prevent Carbonite from hogging my processors, I found that it's just designed that way, but there's a pause option in its Preference pane. Gotta remember to switch it back when I'm done needing better performance though.

    * So, I returned here after days of distractions, to find bimism's post is marked "Solved". It's an interesting post (thanks bimism:), but how did it get marked as the solution? I thought the original poster of a question has to decide what replies are helpful or solve the question… Isn't that how points are awarded? I can't even mark your last one as helpful now. Sorry about that, Eric (you're still doing a lot better than us on points tho;)
