Q: what is sudden motion sensor and how does it work?

So i have been having problems with my macbook air all this time it was working perfectly and yesterday it just stopped turning on and i have searched online and i came across something called sudden motion sensor and people were saying it worked for them and solved this issue so i wanna know what is it and how do i use it

    It is a chip that senses sudden movement or sudden stops. For example, someone pushes the computer from a table with a sharp shove. The computer drops to the floor with a sudden stop. The SMS is supposed to detect this and lock the hard drive and optical drive to prevent damage to the drive heads and to any inserted media. Of course, it can't work with an SSD which does not have moving parts.
