Q: Office 2016 is not working after updating to Sierra

Hello,

I am facing an issue since i updated the os from El Capitan to Sierra last night, when you open Excel or Word it shows an error report, "Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Screen Shot 2016-09-22 at 8.50.06 AM.png

I sent the report to Microsoft, Re Started the program, re started the computer but unfortunately its still not working, and it's kind of a bad situation since i use these apps at work almost everyday.

Please do let me know if anyone know how to solve the issue.

Thank you,

Thisara.

    Sure thing.

Is this Word 2016 v15.26 or later?  If not-- run the updater.

You might also check to see if there is any file prohibiting an app in:

    /Library/Managed Preferences/

It's Word 2016 Version 15.26.1691000. Strangely, I'm able to get this information from right clicking on the Word app and choosing "Quick Look Microsoft Word.app", suggesting to me that the file isn't corrupt but that something else is stopping the app to run.

I've looked in /Library/ Managed Preferences/ and there are no files in that folder.

Once again, thank you for your time and help.

The fast channel in the updater has a 15.27 now... maybe try that?

Also quite a few Office for Mac specialists (including their top coders) hang out in the Slack channel:  MacAdmins/Microsoft-office

    You might ask them...

I know it works on hundreds of Macs here (including Sierra) so don't give up hope....

I'm away from my machine for the next couple of days and will most certainly try your suggestions shortly. Many thanks and I won't give up!

I think the only solution to this, unfortunately, is to wait for Microsoft to fix the problem through an update. Make sure you report the problems to them directly (if you can start up any of your office apps, there's a "smiley" button for feedback - I can't find a public web page for reporting bugs).

    You're not stuck while waiting.

Remember that you can use Pages and Numbers, if you have them, to open Word and Excel files. Or your can download (for free) OpenOffice or LibreOffice as a temporary replacement (assuming those don't have problems with Sierra too; I haven't tried them yet).

If you don't want to install software, and it's OK for you to use cloud-based services (check with your employer if this is for work), you can use Word and Excel on Microsoft's live.com or the Google Docs equivalents.

In a pinch, you can use TextEdit to open Word documents. It's already on every Mac, but the options above are better.

Joseph, I appreciate your thoughts and alternative solutions. I have decided to download Open office as a temporary alternative.

One more thing to check - do you have any "add ons" or extensions to any of your office applications? If you do, try uninstalling them.

I ran into  a similar problem years ago with Office 2011, the culprit was the Proquest/Refworks "Write-N-Cite" plugin for Word (it required Java 6 to be installed, but would just crash all Office apps when starting instead of saying "install java" - and the mac OS update had removed Java 6).

You can also try enabling the "guest" user on your Mac (in system preferences) and log in with that, to see if any office apps start up with the "guest" account (that's essentially a brand new user account, every time you use it). If the "guest" user can't start Word either, then there's probably nothing you can do but wait for the official Microsoft fix. But if Word or Excel start up in the "guest" account, than the problem is in your own account and deleting preferences and such from your own "Library" folder might help (office 2016 uses a folder in the "~/Library/Containers" folder for each individual application and in the "~/Library/Group Containers" folder for shared office files  - but I'm not absolutely sure where you would need poke around).

    Joseph

I've tried running Word from the Guest account without success and have even deleted the folder com.Microsoft.Word from the Library folder, again without success. Also I've no add-ins running in Office.

    Thanks again.

Just an update after carrying out the suggestions on this Microsoft web site:

    https://support.office.com/en-gb/article/Uninstall-Office-2016-for-Mac-eefa1199- 5b58-43af-8a3d-b73dc1a8cae3

Office for MAC 2016 was re-installed for the umpteenth time but with exactly the same results (Word will not open but all other apps open). Word build 15.28 was installed and again with the same result.

I just can laugh about all the answers here

I gave you the solution with the fixed framework, but all you scared rabbits are too afraid to do so.

Well.... my Office Suite works fine with the fix and I DO NOT WANNA WAIT for Microsoft to solve the prob

DRK71, I can't find a link to your solution. What exactly is it?

The post with the fix has been removed from the discussion by the community hosts. It contained a link to a patch from a server that is not maintained by Microsoft.
