    Fix OS X Installation

Try each of these in order. Test to see if the computer is working properly:

    1. Reset the PRAM
    2. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)
    3. Start the computer in Safe Mode, then restart normally. This is slower than a standard startup.
    4. Repair the disk by booting the from the Recovery HD. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears. Choose Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the side list.  Click on the First Aid button in the toolbar. Wait for the Done button to appear. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu. Restart the computer from the Apple Menu.
    5. Reinstall OS X by booting from the Recovery HD using the Command and R keys. When the Utility Menu appears select Reinstall OS X then click on the Continue button.

If you are using Time Machine, it takes quite a while for it to write all the new files to the backup disk. It can take 1 to 2 hours after a major OS upgrade--possibly more if Time Machine is writing to a USB1 or USB2 drive. Is the computer stlill slow after several hours after completing the install?

Have you installed any anti-virus software? Any so-called "cleaning/optimizing/tune-up" utilities? Those are scams only good for destroying Mac performance and ofter only get worse after a major upgrade.

Pay attention that after the macOS Sierra installation, it can take hours to index all your photos and search for people. The performance can be indeed much slower than you expected. After that operation, it should come back to normal.

Give your iMac a day before judging or doing time consuming operations.
