Q: late 2011 MBP shut down

hello all,

i have a late 2011 mbp, 10.9.5, that has started shutting down when off the power cord. i can put it to sleep and move it about and re-plug in, so the shutting down is not immediate. my battery is the original one, but the sys info app says the condition is normal. i have reset the PRAM and the SMC, this seemed to work, but did not for more than a minute or two.

question: even if the sys info app says battery is normal, can it be wrong sometimes?

(an aside, apple just 2 weeks ago replaced the logic board under warranty. i don't think it's connected, but may be.)

i'd be happy to buy a new battery (like the newer tech one) and see if that helps, but with the sys info app saying battery normal, i don't know if this would help. thoughts? pasted battery report below(why o why does pasting from the sys info app not work??):

I have a Late 2011 MBP as well, and I've replaced the logic board myself not long ago.

AND I then had to replace the battery as well...after some issues.

I suggest you replace the battery, it MUST be fried at this point.

By fried I mean old, way way old.

Genius Bar can do some specific tests, that WILL fail if the battery needs replacement.

That's the only way you can know for sure...

good advice. i was expecting a steady decrease in the battery, but not that long ago, i was using it for hours.

did you get the apple battery or an after market? i saw one for $26, 5400mAh, 10.95v, which seems too cheap. and another one from newer tech for $99 it says its a 78 watt-hour, so i need to find out what the direct comparisons are.

    thanks for your help!

I suggest you go to an  Store and let them do the job, don't buy one yourself.

Might be cheaper, but it's best to go for the best...

I got an original replacement, paid 250€ for the battery+service.

The logic board was replaced for free instead, twice actually, as the 1st replacement was faulty.

Depends on which part you're replacing, if it's covered by a quality program (like the logic board) or not (like the battery).

And you're welcome, I hope you can solve your issue!
