Q: Safari stops working after update from Java

L.S.,

I have installed Sierra on my MacbookPro (mid/late 2012). Everything was working fine until Oracle asked for updating my outdated Java-software. From that moment on Safari quitted working. Thinking a restore from Sierra could perhaps help I restored Sierra. However, that did not help.

Who knows what I should/can do to solve this problem?

Thanks,

JosCM

Are you saying that  Safari will not work at all on any sites?

What happens when you use Safari?

What version of Java did you install? If yo have a Java preferences that should tell you

Correct. Safari will start but when I type in a website f.i. www.google.nl, Safari quits, responding with "Safari quit unexpectedly".(Ignore, Report, Reopen). Reporting it to Apple did not give a reaxction from Apple.

    Try uninstalling Java

    https://www.java.com/en/download/help/mac_uninstall_java.xml

    Also maybe:

How do I make java 8 the default with os x 10.9.5

Note that you never identified the version of Java you had installed.. I requested that information in my previous reply

Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items.  Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History…. The down side is it clears all cookies. Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library./Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

This is happening to me, too.  For me, the symptoms are that Safari will randomly just close while a page is loading.  Re-starting Safari restores it with all the previously-opened tabs, and sometimes, but not always, it then loops, partially loading a page and then quitting again.  Restarting the computer sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.

I don't have extensions.  I tried deleting the plist.  Turning off Java disables Safari enough to make it unusable.  I'm about to simply give up on Safari for a while, which is annoying, because it's been my go-to browser and is holding all my passwords.

So:  Anybody have any other ideas?
